Head of school welcome

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Berkeley Carroll School.

Situated in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, New York, Berkeley Carroll draws PreK through 12th Grade students from neighborhoods throughout New York City and the surrounding area who enjoy countless opportunities for exciting, challenging, and authentic discovery within and outside the classroom.

Guided by a gifted and dedicated faculty, learners at Berkeley Carroll navigate an innovative and demanding curriculum that emphasizes interdisciplinarity along with proficiencies such as critical thinking, creativity, and civic engagement. Students in all three divisions engage in substantive research across the disciplines and, over the course of their studies, experience first hand the excitement of posing questions as well as answering them. Learners at Berkeley Carroll are rewarded not only for mastery but also for intellectual risk taking. Our school’s approach to teaching and learning fosters both intrinsic and external motivation steeped in rigor and joy.

Dr. Lisa Yvette Waller

On a daily basis, we consider how undertakings in the classroom, in the science lab, in the art studio, and on the playing field enhance our understanding not only of school pursuits but also of the world beyond our walls. Our program is designed to develop critical, ethical, and global thinkers who display curiosity, discernment, resilience, and empathy—habits of mind that are crucial for successful, productive engagement in an increasingly complex and challenging world.

As they progress through the grades, our students develop independence and self-reliance while having multiple opportunities to see the value in interdependence and collaboration. The deliberate and sustained effort to be a diverse, inclusive, and equitable learning environment informs every aspect of our program; affirming the humanity of all, we aspire to be a school that embraces our individual as well as our group identities—that celebrates our commonalities as well as our differences.

I invite you to visit with us and to experience first hand our vibrant and welcoming community.

Sincerely,

Lisa Yvette Waller, Ph.D.
