Lower School Dean of Students

The Berkeley Carroll School is a Pre-K through grade 12 college-preparatory school of almost 1,000 students located in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn in New York City. Our vibrant learning environment draws students from all over the city. Admission to the school is competitive, and both our parents and students value achievement and community.

Reporting to the Lower School Division Director, the Lower School Dean of Students is responsible for all aspects of the student experience, including partnering with families and coaching faculty. They are responsible for fostering a positive school culture and an atmosphere conducive to learning and healthy development. 

Responsibilities

Student Support and Family Partnerships

  • Create an inclusive environment where all students feel a sense of belonging and are supported academically, socially, and emotionally
  • Be a visible presence in the lower school community
  • Uphold high expectations for student behavior, personal integrity, and community responsibility
  • In partnership with faculty and families, address behavioral and social-emotional challenges using restorative practices that support learning, growth, and community repair

Teaching Coaching and Development

  • Observe and coach faculty to ensure supportive classroom structures and consistently high levels of effective classroom management
  • Partner with division leadership to design and facilitate new faculty onboarding, including orientation planning and ongoing support throughout the first year
  • Design and facilitate professional development sessions that build teacher capacity in aligning teacher practices to student- centered pedagogical approaches (e.g. Yale RULER, Responsive Classroom, IIRP Restorative Practices, MTSS Multi-tiered systems of support) 
  • Ensure faculty have the skills needed to support all learners with high academic and behavioral expectations

Leadership and Operations

  • Collaborate with the Division Director and Student Support Strategies Team (psychologists, learning specialists, and nurses) to develop student life policies, protocols, and practices that support learning, health, and safety
  • Participate in candidate interviews and share feedback with the hiring committee
  • Update and implement Student Handbook policies with the Division Director, ensuring they reflect restorative and equitable practices
  • Partner with the DEI team to center equity in lower school policies and practices
  • Meet regularly with the Lower School Director and Assistant Director to plan faculty meetings, coordinate special events (parent coffees, student performances, Grandparents Day), and support operations (bus dismissal, fire drills)
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director and teachers to create thoughtful class placements
  • Serve on the admissions committee; review student files and attend admissions meetings

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; a Master's degree in education and/or related fields is preferred
  • Demonstrate experience of highly effective classroom management and the ability to coach others to ensure high levels of effective classroom management
  • Experience evaluating teachers preferred
  • Deep commitment to equity and creating learning environments where all students thrive 
  • Experience implementing restorative practices and social-emotional learning frameworks
  • Strong organizational, collaboration, and teamwork skills
  • Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong time and task management skills
  • Ability to navigate uncertainty and unexpected challenges
  • Unwavering belief in high academic and behavioral expectations for all students
  • Self-motivation, desire to be a great teammate, and a strong sense of personal responsibility
  • Ability to build strong relationships with students, families, faculty, and staff
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and strong interpersonal skills with students, parents, colleagues, and community members
  • Available to work outside of school hours, including evenings and weekends

Salary and benefits are highly competitive and will be offered commensurate with experience and credentials. The annual salary range for this position is $120K-$150K.  This full-time, in-person position begins July 1, 2026.
