Children’s Day Camp Head Counselor 

The Berkeley Carroll School is a Pre-K through grade 12 college-preparatory school of approximately 1,000 students located in the Park Slope section of New York City. Our vibrant intellectual community draws students from all over the city, admission to the school is competitive, and both our parents and students value achievement and community.

The Berkeley Carroll School is seeking a Head Counselor for its Children’s Summer Camp in 2026 to lead our groups ranging from grades PreK - 3. Head counselors will oversee the safety and well-being of a group of 20 campers for the duration of the camp.  They will plan and implement age-appropriate recreational and educational activities for campers on a daily basis.

Responsibilities: 

  • Create daily activity plans for campers 
  • Supervise campers, both at Berkeley Carroll and during off-campus visits 
  • Manage a team of CITs/Assistant Counselors 
  • Report any incidents or accidents to appropriate program personnel
  • Communicate with parents, as needed 
  • Assist with safe arrival and departure of campers 
  • Maintain awareness of participant and counselor allergies, medications and emergency contact information 
  • Fulfill other camp duties, as assigned 

Dates and Hours: 

June 24 - August 7, 2026 

Monday - Friday: 8:00am - 4:00pm 

Counselors must be available the week of June 20 for mandatory staff orientation (specific dates and times to be determined). In addition, counselors are expected to work a minimum of two consecutive camp sessions. Preference will be given to applicants who are available for the entire summer season.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least a rising Junior in college or above 
  • Prior experience working with young children in a camp, school, or recreational setting preferred.  Must have a minimum of one of the following: 
    • one season of previous experience at a children’s camp 
    • one year of experience as a babysitter, nanny or child care provider 
    • one year of experience working with children in an after school program or similar educational setting 
  • Ability to lead and manage a group of young campers in a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate manner
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to build positive relationships with campers, families, and team members
  • Comfortable serving as a primary point of contact for camper families; able to communicate clearly, professionally, and empathetically
  • Confident enforcing camp rules and upholding Berkeley Carroll’s values with kindness, fairness, and consistency
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems calmly and effectively, using sound judgment and appropriate decision-making
  • Comfortable using and navigating basic camp-related technology (e.g., email, G-suite, Homeroom)
  • Ability to mentor and support junior counselors, fostering a collaborative and positive team environment
  • Energetic, enthusiastic, and adaptable
