The Berkeley Carroll School is a Pre-K through grade 12 college-preparatory school of almost 1,000 students located in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn in New York City. Berkeley Carroll seeks a potential Latin teacher leave replacement for the start of the 2026 school year (exact dates to be determined, but approximately August 31-October 15). The candidate should feel comfortable teaching introductory through advanced Latin. 

Preferred Qualifications:

• BA in Latin, Education or related field
• Formal experience and knowledge related to Latin and teaching 
• Experience teaching Latin to middle or high school students

Course Outline:

Latin I is a novice-level class for students who have had little or no exposure to Latin. In the first month of school, via simple readings accompanied by lessons and exercises, students learn about: 

• Latin nouns with a specific focus on nominative, accusative, and genitive cases of the 1st declension
• Latin verbs with a focus on 1st conjugation present tense and the present tense of esse

Latin II moves students from a novice to an intermediate level of language proficiency. In the first month of school, via reading an adapted version of Pliny the Younger's letters about the eruption of Vesuvius, students learn:

• 3rd declension i-stem nouns (after a review of 1st-3rd declension regular nouns)
• positive and negative forms of the imperative mood
• the interrogative pronoun (quis, quid)  

Latin III is an intermediate-level class in which students begin to read authentic Latin literature, starting with selections from Cicero's Pro Caelio in the fall. The course begins with presentations and readings on the late Roman Republic as students review material from Latin I and II and learn new material, including:

• 4th and 5th declensions (after a review of 1st-3rd)
• perfect and future tense forms of infinitives (with a review of present tense forms)
• indirect statements

Advanced Latin IV students read selections from Vergil's Aeneid while they review past grammar topics and learn new material:

• the irregular verbs ferō and fīō (combined with a general review of the formation of indicative verb tenses)
• fearing clauses (alongside a review of other "ut" clauses and the present and imperfect tenses of the subjunctive mood)

Salary and benefits are highly competitive and will be offered commensurate with experience and credentials. The annual salary range for this position is $72K-$100K and will be prorated for the time worked in the 2026-27 academic year.
