Visual Arts

Students in all grade levels are invited to participate in an array of visual arts events at Berkeley Carroll, such as our Annual Art Show at Lincoln Place, as well as local, regional and national shows and competitions.

Lower School

From BC 3's through fourth grade, we believe that the process of creating art is just as important as the final product.

Our students learn the value of the artistic process, which involves careful planning, revision, and refining their ideas. This approach instills patience, perseverance, and the willingness to embrace challenges, all the while helping children to create artwork that is distinctly their own.

Middle School

In Middle School, the Visual Arts program encourages students to express their creativity as they gain a foundation in traditional art forms and experiment with contemporary artistic practices.

Emphasis is placed on experimentation, risk-taking and making choices based upon research, introspection, and observation. Students actively think about how art shapes society and provides a means for self-expression. Classes explore art-making beyond the classroom, through museum visits, art walks, neighborhood explorations, and sketchbook assignments. Many interdisciplinary projects are done in conjunction with the Spanish department over these four years.

Upper School

The fact that the majority of our students take art for four years emphasizes the centrality of the arts to the BC culture.

In 9th and 10th grade, students can choose from a variety of performing and visual arts to explore what interests them. Especially motivated students are offered a full credit for their arts choice in 11th and 12th grade to increase their skills in their chosen discipline(s).
