THEATER

Through the study of movement, voice, text analysis, writing, and directing, students learn to apply critical thinking and aesthetic values to the pursuit of acting and storytelling.

The Middle and Upper School present a drama and musical performance every year. Students are encouraged to audition and participate in all facets of the production including acting, dance, singing, and theater tech.

New Works Program

We're proud to announce our New Works Program for both the Upper School and Middle School plays. While our musicals will feature beloved classics, the plays will be brand-new, created in partnership with professional playwrights and written especially for our students.

Through the New Works Program, playwrights collaborate with students to design original scripts that:

  • Feature large, dynamic casts
  • Center female-driven narratives
  • Pass the Bechdel test
  • Honor youth voices and capacity
  • Engage with themes relevant to our community
  • Present intellectual and technical challenges (especially for Upper School productions)

UPCOMING PRODUCTION FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

Once Comma Twice

Written by Mathilda Dratwa

December 11–13

Mathilde Dratwa, an acclaimed playwright and television writer, brings her sharp, playful, and poignant style to BC. Her new play blends two timelines: teens in the present working on a school history project, and a far-future dystopia where nuance is outlawed and punctuation must be spoken aloud. Through humor and intrigue, the play asks: How do we remember the past? Where is the line between fact and fiction? Why did Maya cut Jordan’s hair to look like a pinecone?

Theatrical Production and Design

Students have the opportunity to concentrate on the major areas of theatre technology and production. They explore advanced set design and construction techniques, the creative process involved in translating a script into a visual design, and the essentials of developing costumes, props, lighting and sound designs. Students will be invited to investigate a broad range of production design topics, which may include puppet and mask creation, building and painting techniques, renderings in costume and set design, and model building.
