Some school assemblies are informative. Some are fun. This assembly was everything.

At this month's Lower School Rainbow Alliance Pride Assembly, students in Grades 1 through 4 took turns at the microphone to speak about identity, community, and what it means to show up for the people you love.

Students learned more about the Rainbow Alliance and that it welcomes anyone who identifies as LGBTQIA+, has LGBTQIA+ friends or family, or simply wants to spend time learning how to make the world a little more fair and joyful. From there, students explained what Pride Month means to them.

Next BC faculty traced the origins of Pride Month to its New York City roots. Students learned about the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan's West Village and the brave people who stood their ground, and sparked the modern LGBTQIA+ rights movement in the United States.

Second grade Rainbow Alliance members added their own chapter to the lesson, sharing the story behind the rainbow flag, who created it and the meaning woven into each of its colors.

Throughout the assembly, students reflected on what Pride means to them as individuals, and what it means to be an ally. The voices in the room represented a range of perspectives and experiences, united by a shared commitment to a community where everyone belongs.

The assembly closed the way every great Pride celebration should: with a dance party.
