Senior Scholars Host First Roundtable in the Upper School Library

The Upper School Library was busy with conversation as Berkeley Carroll’s Senior Scholars hosted the first round of their annual Roundtables, inviting faculty and staff to engage directly with their research.

The Roundtables are a hallmark of the Senior Scholars program. Designed as an opportunity for students to articulate their arguments to an audience unfamiliar with their work, the sessions encourage clear communication, critical feedback, and dynamic discussion. Participants are not asked to read drafts in advance; instead, they listen, ask questions, and engage in meaningful dialogue to help students sharpen their thinking as they move into the rough draft stage.

This year’s projects span an extraordinary range of disciplines, geographies, and historical periods. Students are exploring topics such as the structural limits on Black economic mobility through the history of Harlem’s Freedom National Bank; the evolution of the “tradwife” movement from mid-20th-century antifeminism to modern social media culture; and the commercialization of hip-hop and its influence on constructions of Black identity.

Across topics, students are tackling complex systems, financial, political, cultural, and environmental, and asking bold questions about power, identity, and historical legacy.

The Roundtables not only provide students with invaluable feedback but also highlight the intellectual vibrancy of the Senior Scholars program. A second session will follow, offering another opportunity for faculty and staff to contribute their perspectives and expertise.

We look forward to seeing how these ambitious projects continue to evolve.
