Ringing in the Year of the Horse: Lunar New Year Celebrations Across BC Lions Share

In honor of the Lunar New Year, Berkeley Carroll was proud to welcome special guests Chinese Theatre Works, an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Chinese performing arts, including opera, shadow theater, puppetry, dance, and music. Through dynamic performances and interactive demonstrations, students across divisions experienced the rich cultural traditions that mark the holiday.

At the Athletic Center, the Lower School gathered for an enchanting shadow puppet performance of Tiger Tales and the Shadow Lion and Dragon, featuring colorful characters, and beautifully intricate shadow artistry. The celebration also included meaningful moments of community connection, as several Lower School students proudly shared the ways their families celebrate Asian culture and the Lunar New Year.

Meanwhile, at Sterling Place, Upper School students attended a special musical demonstration introduced by members of BC’s AAPISA (Asian American Pacific Islander South Asian) affinity group. Student leaders shared personal reflections on how their families observe the holiday before welcoming the performers to the stage.

The program was an introduction to Chinese folk and classical music, including incredible performances featuring traditional instruments such as the guzheng and the pipa. Students learned the history, lore, and mythology of these instruments, and even had the opportunity to try playing them themselves. The event concluded with a beautiful and mesmerizing Chinese folk dance.

Berkeley Carroll extends heartfelt thanks to Chinese Theatre Works for sharing their artistry, history, and cultural traditions with our community, and for helping us celebrate and welcome the Year of the Horse together.
