Portrait in Practice: A Day of Growth and Collaboration

While students enjoyed a day off campus, Berkeley Carroll faculty and staff stepped into classrooms of their own for Professional Learning Day: Portrait in Practice—a BC-wide opportunity to learn from one another through hands-on workshops, collaborative sessions, and shared experiences rooted in our Portrait of a Learner.

The day began with updates from Head of School Dr. Lisa Yvette Waller and a school-wide group session, that marks one of the few times in the year when the entire faculty and staff are together in one place. A special highlight came from the Faculty and Staff Choir, whose performance brought everyone together before the day’s workshops began.

From there, faculty and staff spread out across campus to engage in a wide range of sessions led by their colleagues, each one reflecting the curiosity, creativity, and collaboration we aim to cultivate in our students. Workshops ranged from practical and reflective to playful and unexpected: educators explored strategies for creative thinking and behavioral interviewing, engaged in conversations around conflict and discourse, and even stepped into sessions like improv, pickleball, and even swimming.

Other sessions invited participants to think deeply about teaching and learning, from responding creatively to literature to examining the role of media in shaping values. Whether building new skills, sharing expertise, or simply trying something new, the day highlighted the incredible depth of knowledge within the BC community.

At its core, Portrait in Practice is about modeling what we ask of our students every day: to stay curious, take risks, collaborate, and continue growing. By learning from one another, faculty and staff not only strengthen their own practice but also deepen the sense of connection that makes Berkeley Carroll such a vibrant learning community.

Thank you to all who shared their time, expertise, and energy to make the day a meaningful and memorable one.
