Lower School Celebrates Jewish Heritage Month

Lower School students gathered in the Berkeley Carroll Athletic Center for a special assembly honoring Jewish Heritage Month. Led by student members of the Lower School's Jewish affinity group, the celebration was a warm and vibrant showcase of tradition, identity, and community.

Students stepped up to share what they love most about their Jewish heritage, the foods, the holidays, the songs, and time with family that mark each passing year. The room listened as students explained the traditions of Shabbat, and came alive again as young voices joined together to sing traditional Jewish songs.

A fun quiz put students' knowledge to the test, asking them to identify famous Jewish changemakers and artists across history and popular culture, from Albert Einstein and Ruth Bader Ginsburg to Judy Blume, Bob Dylan, Drake, and Adam Sandler.

The assembly also welcomed its special guests, members of the Upper School's Jewish Student Union (JSU), who made the trip down to share their own favorite pieces of their heritage with their younger schoolmates. They capped the visit by reading aloud The Very Best Sukkah: A Story From Uganda by Shoshana Nambi, a picture book that brings the celebration of Sukkot to life through the lens of the Abayudaya Jewish community of Uganda, bringing together themes of cooperation, community, and cultural pride.

The message at the heart of the assembly was one BC knows well. The traditions we carry, our foods, songs, holidays, and stories, are what connect us to one another and make our shared community richer.
