English teacher nathan blum

Congratulations to Upper School English teacher Nathan Blum, whose short story, “Outcomes,” was recently published in The New Yorker. The story follows two college students in Maine whose connection leads to unexpected lessons about identity, ambition, and the uncertainty of the future, a theme that resonates with Blum’s own reflections on teaching and learning.

In an accompanying New Yorker interview, Blum discusses the inspiration behind “Outcomes,” the role of education in his writing, and how his background as both a teacher and lifelong student shapes his storytelling.

“Teaching, like writing, is best learned by doing, and doing in a community,” Blum explains. “What [my characters] experience is an education in itself: a connection in which knowledge and insight flow both ways.”

We are proud to celebrate Mr. Blum’s remarkable achievement and the thoughtful creativity he brings to both his classroom and his writing.
