Berkeley Carroll's 27th Annual Egyptian Tomb Returns

Berkeley Carroll’s fifth graders proudly hosted the 27th Annual Egyptian Tomb, a beloved Middle School tradition and true rite of passage for BC students. What began decades ago as a simple sculpture display has evolved into a dynamic, interdisciplinary showcase of learning, featuring performances, exhibitions, and immersive experiences that bring ancient Egypt vividly to life.

The Tomb represents the culmination of months of study and investigation into the history and culture of ancient Egypt including an illuminating class trip to The Met. Drawing on work from humanities, math, science, Spanish, and the arts, students created a multifaceted experience that filled the Lincoln Place campus with creativity and learning.

The evening began with a warm welcome in the cafeteria before guests set off in groups to explore the exhibitions. In one room, students performed a play about Cleopatra. In another, they dramatized the rise and fall of Hatshepsut, one of the few women to rule as pharaoh. Elsewhere, visitors encountered student-made trading cards about ancient gods, presentations on Egyptian mathematics, and a brand-new addition this year: Egyptian architectural 3D designs created in Tinkercad, blending historical research with digital innovation.

The highlight for many was the journey through the dark and mysterious Egyptian Tomb itself. Guided by fifth graders, visitors explored collaborative murals and handcrafted artifacts made from clay, cardboard, plaster, and wire. As students explained the symbolism and purpose of each object, they demonstrated how ancient artifacts continue to communicate meaning across time and cultures.

The celebration continued the following day as fifth graders welcomed Lower School students for special daytime tours, proudly stepping into the role of teachers and guides.

Congratulations to the faculty, staff, and especially the fifth graders who made this year’s Egyptian Tomb an exciting and memorable success.
