Berkeley Carroll Appoints Ivy Castro as Director of Lower School Admissions

The Berkeley Carroll School is pleased to announce that Ivy Castro has been appointed Director of Lower School Admissions, effective July 1, 2026.

Castro brings more than a decade of experience at Berkeley Carroll and a deep understanding of the school’s mission, community, and approach to teaching and learning. Her appointment comes at a meaningful moment in the admissions cycle, as families receiving decisions begin considering their next educational home. Castro will lead a Lower School admissions process that is both discerning and deeply personal—one that reflects Berkeley Carroll’s commitment to high standards, thoughtful engagement, and honoring the individuality and developmental journey of every child.

Castro has been a member of the Berkeley Carroll community for twelve years. During that time, she has served in a range of roles that reflect both instructional expertise and institutional leadership, including Lower School teacher, Lower School Equity and Inclusion Coordinator, and Lower School Dean of Students. She has also been an active member of the Lower School Admissions Committee and most recently served as Interim Assistant Director of Lower School Admissions.

A graduate of Barnard College, Castro holds a master’s degree in Dual Language/Bilingual Childhood Special and General Education from Bank Street College of Education and a master’s degree in School Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. Her professional background reflects extensive preparation in teaching, leadership, and inclusive practice, along with a nuanced understanding of child development and inquiry-based learning.

Over the past year, Castro has played a central role in the Lower School admissions process, presenting at Open Houses, facilitating playgroups and parent conversations, and participating in Admissions Committee deliberations. Her work reflects a belief that the admissions experience is often a family’s first encounter with Berkeley Carroll and should embody the school’s commitment to seeing and supporting children as they are and as they will be.

“I am deeply honored and truly overjoyed to step into the role of Director of Lower School Admissions,” Castro said. “For the past 12 years, this school has been home to me—a place of enduring relationships, meaningful work, and shared purpose. It is a privilege to now help welcome families as they begin their journey, and I cannot wait to share the warmth, excellence, and joy that make Berkeley Carroll and our community so special. At the heart of this work are the children we serve, and I am eager to help each family find a place where every child can truly thrive, grow, and experience a true sense of belonging.”

Head of School Lisa Yvette Waller expressed appreciation for Castro’s leadership and preparation for the role.

“Ivy brings deep knowledge of our community, strong educational leadership, and a profound commitment to the families we serve,” Dr. Waller said. “Her work reflects both the academic excellence and the sense of community that define Berkeley Carroll.”

Dr. Waller also expressed gratitude to Assistant Head of School for Professional Learning and Institutional Equity Brandie Melendez for her leadership as Interim Director of Lower School Admissions during the past year. While continuing in her primary role, Melendez led the admissions office through a period of transition, strengthening systems, supporting colleagues, and ensuring a thoughtful and welcoming process for prospective families.

Castro will continue to collaborate closely with colleagues across divisions as she assumes leadership of Lower School Admissions this summer.
