BC Honors Black History Month with the BSU Extravaganza

The Berkeley Carroll Upper School recently gathered for the annual Black Student Union (BSU) Black History Month Extravaganza, a meaningful celebration of culture, creativity, and community.

Organized by the Upper School BSU, the event transformed the space into a lively festival filled with interactive stations where students could explore music, dance, sports, games, and of course food… lots of food. The activities encouraged students to learn, connect, and celebrate the many contributions of Black culture in an engaging and communal atmosphere.

The highlight of the event was a special performance by Jamel Gaines Creative Outlet. Founded in 1994 by Jamel Gaines, the organization is dedicated to transforming lives through the power of dance, storytelling, and cultural enrichment. Rooted in the African American experience, their work connects communities across New York City through performances, arts education programs, and wellness initiatives.

The performance was both powerful and moving, weaving together themes of history, identity, and social justice. Through expressive choreography and storytelling, the dancers invited the audience to reflect on the African American experience while celebrating resilience, creativity, and community.

Following the performance, the dancers welcomed students onto the stage for a special dance tutorial that brought everyone together in music, movement, and community.

The BSU Extravaganza was a memorable day filled with learning, celebration, and connection, an inspiring tribute to Black History Month and the vibrant voices that help shape the Berkeley Carroll community.
