Award Winning Author–Illustrator James Yang Visits the Lower School

The Berkeley Carroll Lower School recently welcomed special guest James Yang, an award-winning artist and designer whose work appears in books, publications, and even on New York City subway cars.

Yang is the recipient of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for the most distinguished American book for beginning readers, which he received for his book Stop! Bot!.

Students in BC 3s, PreK, and Grade 1 gave Yang a warm Berkeley Carroll welcome by decorating the Investigations Room with a welcome sign inspired by his book Go Sled! Go!. First graders also proudly displayed their own creative chair designs inspired by Yang’s book Charles & Ray: Designers at Play.

During the visit, Yang shared readings from several of his books, including his newest release, A Universe Big & Small: A Story About Carl Sagan. Students listened closely as he brought the stories to life and shared insights about his creative process.

The visit concluded with a lively, interactive drawing tutorial where Yang guided students step-by-step in creating their own whimsical version of New York City.

Berkeley Carroll thanks James Yang for sharing his creativity, curiosity, and artistic inspiration with our students.
