Travel Programs

Berkeley Carroll's travel programs are part of the academic program, not stand-alone sightseeing trips. The kind of authentic global thinking we foster requires students to prepare beforehand and to engage in serious reflection while abroad. Throughout, students consider both their own place in the world, and their responsibilities to its future.

Mexico City, Mexico

This language immersion trip is an extension of the academic work you engage in during your  Spanish classes at Berkeley Carroll. Mexico City, with its roots in the ancient Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán, is a vibrant metropolis where history, culture, and social activism converge in extraordinary ways. As you dive into city life, you will improve your Spanish through experiential learning and authentic conversations with local activists, artisans, cooks, and other community members—practicing the language in meaningful, real-world contexts that will connect you directly to Latin American culture. 

Panama

What does it mean to belong to a place? This essential question will guide our journey as we learn from the peoples, plants, animals, waters, and lands of Panama. This question also challenges us to see the connections between conservation biology and indigeneity. The word “indigenous” comes from the Latin indigena, “sprung from the land.” As guests in Panama, we will have the chance to connect with cultures and communities that are deeply tied to place. 

Cap D'Ail, France 

Our exhilarating Spring Intensive French Language Abroad Program takes students directly to the picturesque French Riviera, staying in Cap d’Ail between Nice and Monaco. Located at the stunning, historic Centre Méditerranéen d’Etudes françaises (CMEF), students fully immerse themselves in contemporary French life. Mornings are spent enhancing language skills in on-site classes, while afternoons are dedicated to cultural excursions across the P.A.C.A. region (including Nice, Cannes, and Monaco). Students engage directly with native speakers, study the history and art of figures like Picasso, savor local cuisine, and develop a lasting, open-minded appreciation for global travel and learning, making this an unforgettable extension of their Berkeley Carroll language education.

Southern US

Journey Through the South: Blackness, Activism, and Southern Identity. Explore the American South’s powerful history of resilience and activism on this transformative journey through key Civil Rights and Black American landmarks. Starting in Atlanta and traveling by bus through Birmingham, Montgomery, Selma, New Orleans, Jackson, and Memphis, students will visit iconic sites such as the home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the Equal Justice Initiative Museum, and the Whitney Plantation. Beyond history, the trip celebrates the rich cultural contributions of Black Americans to music and cuisine, from Preservation Hall jazz to Memphis soul. Through daily discussions, journaling, and interactions with local communities and activists, students will gain a critical understanding of the South's complex identity, the multifaceted nature of American Blackness, and how historical movements continue to inspire social justice efforts today.

Granada, Spain

This language immersion trip is an extension of the academic work students engage in during their Spanish classes at Berkeley Carroll. Set in the stunning and historically rich city of Granada, the trip provides students with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the language, culture, history, and contemporary life of Spain.

Utah

On this trip, a partnership with High Mountain Institute, we will spend eight nights/nine days traveling through the canyons of Southeastern Utah using these essential questions from American Studies and the American West as our lens: How has geography shaped US identity? How does the landscape–both geographically and socially–shape the history and our current understanding of the West? And How do we ethically and critically engage with a landscape primarily shaped by wind, water and time?
