Grade 8 Capstone

The CAPstone (Community Action Partnership) is the final academic component of the 8th-grade year—a year-long inquiry that ends with an immersive, hands-on week of service learning in June. It is designed to combine academic research with real-world community action.

The Mission:

Students move beyond "volunteering" to engage in purposeful community action. The goal is to understand systemic issues (like environmental sustainability or food insecurity) and see how local organizations are addressing them.

The Experience:

During the final week of school, students work directly with NYC-based non-profit partners (such as FabScrap, which fights textile waste). They don't just observe; they participate in the work and learn about the organization's mission.

The Outcome:

Students often produce a final product—such as an open letter to the community, a presentation, or an advocacy campaign—reflecting on their role in contributing to a better world.
