IRANIAN SCHOLAR-ARCHITECT IN RESIDENCE AT THE UPPER SCHOOL
Iranian scholar, architect, educator and activist Sara Kamalvand was recently in residence at the Upper School, visiting classes in a wide range of disciplines and speaking at a divisional assembly. Challenging architecture’s traditional focus on growth, progress and conquest, she uses the intersection of ecology, history, geopolitics, and belief systems to help society address climate change and improve water and food access. Much of her work centers around the Persian Garden which, due to Iran’s hot arid climate, relies on a system of deep underground tunnels and wells that channel water; these gardens act as mirrors between the underground and cosmos.
As part of Kamalvand’s residency, students are designing a Persian Garden to serve as a metaphorical expression of what it means to be a changemaker and make a difference in your environment and the world around you.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: TIM BENDERNAGEL ‘13
Congratulations to BC alum Tim Bendernagel ‘13, whose performance in John Jasperse’s “Visitation” was celebrated as one of the Best Dance Performances of 2022 by the New York Times!
Theirdance critics wrote, “An eerier kind of togetherness emerged in John Jasperse’s “Visitation” for Doug LeCours, Tim Bendernagel and Cynthia Koppe. Invoking ghosts and ghostliness, this spacious yet intricate work managed to fill NYU Skirball’s expansive stage, building to a climax where the three dancers, uncannily, appeared enmeshed as one”. SENIOR SPEAKERS
Congrats to our latest round of Senior Speakers, April S., Ani F., and Annick H.V.! April spoke about how perfectionism can often lead to certain failure, and that it’s more important to focus on self-improvement and taking risks rather than aiming for absolute perfection when it comes to achieving your goals.
Ani shared the anxiety that comes with leaving a pet behind to attend college, but how taking time away from cat “motherhood” will ultimately lead to both Ani and the cat developing greater independence.
As a former member of a so-called “Dad Rock” band made up of early adolescents in middle school, Annick described the kind of disillusionment that ultimately came after leaving the band, advising the audience to make sure they stay in touch with hobbies and interests that feel important to them.
