BC SPEECH & DEBATE SCORES TOP 2 FINISH AT LAST TOURNAMENT OF 2022 Berkeley Carroll Speech and Debate finished 2022 strong with a 2nd place finish overall in the last tournament of the year for the Brooklyn Queens Catholic Forensic League. There were many outstanding performances from BC students: Mina T. ‘24 won 1st place in Programmed Oral Interpretation, Amelia L. ‘24 won 2nd place in Dramatic Interpretation, with Anika F. ‘23 coming in 4th in the same category. Daniela H. ‘25 took second place in Varsity Extemporaneous, Nuri R. ‘24 took 4th in Student Congress, Willow A. ‘25 took 4th in Declamation, and the team of Sam B. ‘26 and Jaylen H.’26 won second place in Novice Public Forum. Congratulations to BC Speech and Debate!
HONORING DR. KING: YALE HISTORY PROFESSOR SPEAKS TO UPPER & MIDDLE SCHOOL
To honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Middle and Upper School hosted a conversation with Yale University Associate Professor of History & African American Studies Elizabeth Hinton, who is considered one of the country’s leading experts on criminalization and policing. The talk was facilitated by Upper School History Department Chair Amber Thomas and student moderators McKenna D. ‘23 and Mulan J. ‘24. who asked Professor Hinton poignant questions about the history of protest, policing, and the contemporary importance of Dr. King’s messages.
6TH GRADERS WELCOME BESTSELLING AUTHOR-ILLUSTRATOR GEORGE O’CONNOR 6th graders welcomed author, illustrator, and cartoonist George O’Connor to Lincoln Place! O’Connor is the creator of the New York Times bestselling series, “Olympians”, which draws upon classic tales from ancient Greek mythology and retells them as action-packed comics. O’Connor spoke to students about his creative process as both an artist and a storyteller, and led a workshop on combining words and images to create a strong narrative in stories.
SENIOR SPEAKERS
Congrats to our latest round of Senior Speakers, Chiara N. and Jamie K.! Chiara highlighted three complicated female characters from movies and television shows over the years, pointing out how much there is to learn from these characters about our own dynamic and complex inner selves. Jamie spoke about the challenges that came with readjusting to in-person school after a period of remote learning, and how the friends and relationships at Berkeley Carroll served as an anchor and made the transition easier by looking forward to seeing their faces every day.
