BC CANDLELIGHTING CELEBRATES A SUCCESSFUL FIRST SEMESTER BC celebrated a fantastic first semester and kicked off Winter Break at the Candlelighting ceremonies! Student representatives from each grade, members of faculty and staff, members of the Parent Association, and alumni all joined Dr. Lisa Waller to light the candles.
At the Lower School ceremony, Kimberly Beck and Dr. Waller both gave remarks, and 4th Graders sang “Season’s Greetings.”
At the Middle and Upper School ceremony, remarks were given by Dr. Waller and Upper School Science Teacher Jessica Smith. The Upper School and Middle School choirs performed a new song written by students, “A Berkeley Carol,” with the Upper School Chamber Ensemble, who also performed "Christmas Time is Here" from A Charlie Brown Christmas. 2ND GRADERS STUDY QUEENS MUSEUM'S NYC PANORAMA TO PREPARE FOR CREATING THEIR OWN
2nd Graders traveled to the Queens Museum to see their famous panorama model of New York City. The model comprises an area of 9,335 square feet, where one inch equals 100 feet, capturing the entire city in miniature form. This ties into the students’ work in the classroom, where they’ve been learning about what communities need to thrive and, in particular, what connects New York City and its five borough communities together. This learning unit will culminate in a project where students build a thriving community model, similar to the panorama, using their freshly gained knowledge.

SENIOR SPEAKERS Congrats to our latest round of Senior Speakers, Ella B., Gray S.C., and Sydney H.!
By taking the audience on a journey of past micro-obsessions over the years, including the Kardashians, astrology, and of course, theater, Ella reminded us that our identities are multi-faceted and cannot be defined solely by our quirky interests.
Through a semi-biographical, allegorical fairytale, complete with a full cast of characters standing in for friends, faculty members, and coaches, Sydney spoke about the BC experience, including how it led to becoming Co-President of Executive Council.
After recounting the tale of how Senior Speech dates were selected through an intense Rock, Paper, Scissors Battle Royale, Gray spoke about writer's block, brainstorming, and working to find a creative process that feels right when tasked with a daunting writing assignment. |
1ST GRADERS WELCOME PARENTS AS READING PARTNERS
1st graders welcomed their parents, guardians and other family members to their classrooms to participate in Parents As Reading Partners. PARP is a collaborative school tradition where family members and other members of the BC community are paired with students to read aloud together, as part of building a reading partnership between school and the home. This gives students the opportunity to demonstrate how they are growing in their reading ability and celebrate a love of reading.
