Tournament Eligibility & Waitlist

Students who are currently in Grades 5-12 are eligible to sign up for the tournament. You do not need to attend Berkeley Carroll in order to sign up.

What is Rapid Knockout Chess?

16 players will go head to head in the first round of the game, with everyone starting off with 15 minutes on their clock. Whoever loses, is knocked out of the tournament after a single loss. Whoever wins advances to the next round. 

• Round 1: 16 players competing, 8 advancing.
• Round 2: 8 players competing, 4 advancing.
• Round 3: 4 players competing, 2 advancing.
• Round 4: 2 players competing, 1 winning.
• Having 15 minutes on the clock is categorized as a Rapid game. These games will not go longer than 30 minutes.
• You can win by either checkmate, or your opponent's clock running out of time.
• If there is a tie, there will be a tie-breaker game with only 10 minutes on the clock.
• We will have arbiters (chess referees) available to help ensure fair play.

Cancellation & Waitlist Policy

If you're already registered for the tournament but need to cancel, please email Amanda Jerido-Katz at ajeridokatz@berkeleycarroll.org. In the event of a cancellation, whoever is first on the waitlist will be contacted and will have 24 hours to respond before we move onto the next person on the waitlist.
