BC WINTER CONCERT BRINGS DOWN THE HOUSE

Last night's Winter Concert was a showcase for BC's music program, playing before a record setting crowd and featuring performances by students from all three divisions of the school. Performers: The Third & Fourth Grade Chorus, Upper School Orchestra, Upper School Philharmonic, Upper School Chamber Choir and Upper School Chamber Orchestra, Middle School & Upper School Choir, Upper School Jazz Ensemble with a finale that featured all groups. MIDDLE SCHOOLERS EARN MATH HONORS IN NATIONAL COMPETITION
The math department is very proud that an impressive 211 BC Middle Schoolers participated in the American Mathematics Competition 8! This prestigious and challenging math competition is taken by students world-wide. BC's top scorers performed in the top 5% of all participants nationally.

Congratulations to these students who were recognized for their great work:

4TH GRADERS HELP BRING OYSTERS BACK TO NYC WATERS
BC 4th grade scientists have partnered with the non-profit Billion Oyster Project to help restore the surprisingly helpful bivalve back to New York City water. Read the full story,

UPPER SCHOOL CHESS TEAM IS TOP 3 IN NYC LEAGUE
Congrats to the BC Chess Team ,which continued its run of success in tournament play! The Lions are currently Top 3 in the Chess Center of New York's Magnus League, where schools from all five boroughs compete. After the latest round of competition, BC edged out Stuyvesant High School for third place, thanks to an advantage on tiebreaks.

LOWER SCHOOLERS PARTICIPATE IN HOUR OF CODE
Students in 1st through 4th grades took part in the annual Hour of Code! Although BC students spend a lot more than just one hour each year learning to code, the event brings together more than 100 million students worldwide to inspire creativity and recognize the importance of coding to 21st century skills. Lower School students participated in a variety of programming activities, with 3rd and 4th graders coding a Dance Party while younger students worked with "Scratch, Jr.," a computer language created at MIT.

SENIOR SPEAKERS

Congratulations to the last round of Senior Speakers for 2018! (L-R Diego T., Logan M., and Alanna L.) Diego shared with the audience his voracious love of pasta, which he rarely goes a day without eating (for breakfast, lunch or dinner). Logan talked about his love for fishing, which he inherited from his dad, and learning to surf cast off the beaches of Cape Cod and Martha Vineyard.

Alanna shared her deep dream for adventure. She said both waking and asleep, she often imagines escaping to new places, sharing a similar wanderlust with the main character from "Moana."

 

LOWER SCHOOL AND PARENT ASSOCIATION PARTNER FOR ZERO WASTE INITIATIVE
The Lower School is partnering with the Parent Association's Green Committee to move one step closer to becoming a truly Zero Waste School by using Terracycle! Each classroom will have a Terracycle bin where non-recyclable items can be discarded. Then, those items will be turned into raw materials to be used in new products.

UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT CANCER FROM ONCOLOGIST
Upper School biology students heard from BC parent and oncologist, Dr. Sarada Krishnamurthy, learning about the history of cancer, its causes, and recent developments in treatments.

2ND GRADERS READ THEIR STORIES TO THEIR FAMILIES

2nd grade students recently hosted their families to read from their first stories of the year! Congratulations, authors!

CANDLE LIGHTING WELCOMES THE BEGINNING OF WINTER

Berkeley Carroll celebrated a successful first semester and the start of Winter season with the annual Candle Lighting ceremonies.  Representatives from each grade plus the Parent Association, faculty, staff, and alumni joined Head of School Bob Vitalo to light the candles. The Third and Fourth Grade Chorus and Upper School Choir performed as well. Photos.
