BC STUDENTS NAMED TO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL HONORS JAZZ ENSEMBLE

Congratulations to BC students for their tremendous work recently in the ISMA Honors Jazz Ensemble! This group is comprised of the best players from top NYC independent schools. The Middle School band electrified the audience with their performance, while trumpet great, Terell Stafford, guest conducted the Upper School Band.

 

High School students selected to the band are Lukas H. '19 and Graham S. '19, Sean W. '20, Antonio D. '21, Kai E. '21, Charlie H. '21, Oliver S. '21, Will C. '22, Chloe P. '22, and Truth T '22.

BC FACULTY SPEAK AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE ABOUT CAMPUS OPERATIONS

Congratulations to Director of Campus Operations Anne Fenton and Summer Programs Manager Christopher Flores who were asked to present at a Summer Programs and Auxiliary Revenue Conference attended by more than 200 participants from independent schools across the country. Their session was titled, "Choice and Flexibility: Giving Parents What They Really Want For Summer Programming."

8TH GRADER WINS RIDING CHAMPIONSHIP
Congrats to Clio R. '23 who won Reserve Champion in the Hudson Valley Hunter Jumper Association horse show.

2ND GRADERS APPEAR ON "GOOD DAY NEW YORK"
Several BC 2nd Graders recently appeared on Fox 5's "Good Day New York!" The students appeared with their Girl Scout Troop and had the opportunity to be reporters for the morning to ask Nickelodeon and YouTube star JoJo Siwa questions.

BC INVITED TO ATTEND NATIONAL 'PEOPLE OF COLOR CONFERENCE'

BC faculty and students departed for Nashville on Wednesday to attend the annual National Association of Independent Schools People of Color Conference! The group will explore topics on this year's theme, "Equitable Schools and Inclusive Communities: Harmony, Discord, and the Notes in Between."

KINDERGARTNERS LEARN SIGN LANGUAGE WITH AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR
As part of their five senses and able bodies unit, students were excited to have award-winning children's book author Kentrell Martin visit! Mr. Martin is the author of the picture books that incorporate American Sign Language while telling a fun-filled story. He read one of his books and taught students almost 30 signs.

THANKSGIVING ASSEMBLY

Held last Tuesday, BC's Thanksgiving Assembly is the only event in the year where the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools gather and celebrate in the same room. Head of School Bob Vitalo welcomed students Miles S. '27, Mary D. '23, and Nicole N. '20 who spoke on the themes of "thanks" and "community," and Upper School English Teacher Madeline Clapps  who shared a story about her family. The Middle and Upper School Choirs also performed before the traditional "Thank You" finale by 3rd and 4th Grade Chorus. Photos.

SENIOR SPEAKERS
Congratulations to our latest Senior Speakers: (L-R) Eve B., Zoe C., Skye K. and Brendan Z.! Eve shared what it's like for to be an introvert, including common misconceptions and her efforts to become more outgoing. Zoe movingly detailed what it was like for her to unexpectedly lose a family member last year and reminded classmates to spend the holidays making happy memories with family.

Skye talked about how the last night in his childhood home when a wayward squirrel found its way inside influenced how he sees the world. Brendan spoke on the legacy that senior speakers leave behind each year in only 5 or 6 minute speeches, reminding the audience what it means to be "defined by our words."

HOLOCAUST SURIVOR SPEAKS TO 8TH GRADE
Holocaust survivor Sally Frishberg was one of only a dozen Jewish citizens from a small town in Poland to survive World War II, hidden along with a handful of family members for two years in the hay loft of a local farmer.  Ms. Frishberg shared her remarkable story with 8th graders in the history course, "Holocaust and Human Behavior," where students have been reflecting on the choices people have made in the past and the choices people continue to make today. ACCLAIMED AUTHOR JAMEL BRINKLEY SPEAKS TO UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS
Author Jamel Brinkley recently visited our Upper School and read from "A Lucky Man," his first book of short stories which was a finalist for the 2018 National Book Award in Fiction and then answered questions from students about his writing process.

 

Mr. Brinkley is a graduate of Columbia University and the Iowa Writers' Workshop and currently a Wallace Stegner Fellow in Fiction at Stanford University.

5TH GRADERS DESIGN GRATITUDE BANNER FOR CAFETERIA STAFF
5th graders created a gratitude banner, now hanging outside the cafeteria, to express their appreciation for the wonderful BC cafeteria staff and also to recognize the names of each of these important community members who work so hard to create the wonderful meals they get to enjoy every day.

STUDENTS GO ON ART GALLERY TOUR FEATURING THEIR TEACHER'S WORK
Middle and Upper School Visual Arts teacher Tammy Nguyen recently led a group of Upper School teachers on a gallery tour which included her own exhibition which the New York Times called "exhilarating."

FIRST GRADERS GO TO FARMER'S MARKET

First graders traveled to Prospect Park and the Farmer's Market, where they walked on the trail, played in the meadow, observed how different community members use the park, asked the farmers lots of great questions, and picked out a pumpkin to take home!

"BLACK HUMAN GIRL" AFFINITY GROUP GOES TO BROADWAY 

Members of the Upper School Black Human Girl affinity group recently visited Broadway to see "School Girls; or, the African Mean Girls Play." The show explores issues of colorism and beauty standards that impact Black women and girls around the world.

BC REUNIONS OVER THANKSGIVING BREAK ATTRACT 60 ALUMNI
It was great seeing over 60 BC alums who came out last week for the Annual Thanksgiving Eve Alumni Party! Attendees spanned nearly three decades of class years. And on Saturday, the Class of 2008 held their own mini-reunion!
