MIDDLE SCHOOLERS WELCOME HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR
Holocaust survivor Allan J. Hall spoke to 8th Grade Humanities classes about his memoir "Hiding in Plain Sight." Mr. Hall was 4 years old when the Nazis invaded his native Poland; his family spent the years that followed running and hiding from German soldiers until World War II ended. Students asked the speaker questions ranging from his strongest memories of his childhood to parallels he sees with the current war in Ukraine. He also revealed that he tries to enjoy every day of life and practice acts of "tikkun olam" (repairing the world).
5TH GRADER PERFORMS IN BENEFIT CONCERT FOR UKRAINE
Berkeley Carroll's very own Zoë S. '29 performed in a benefit concert alongside children from the Broadway community to raise money for children affected by the crisis in Ukraine. She even performed an original song! The concert raised over $5,000 for Save The Children.
SENIOR SPEAKERS (PART I)
Congratulations to our first set of Senior Speakers! Sam R. shared the unique experience of growing up on a tightly-knit neighborhood block, one that became even more so during the Covid lockdown, and how impactful having that closeness with neighbors has been. Annika S. discussed a family passion: fostering kittens (they're on their 19th!) and spoke about how much patience and dedication that takes. Yazan B. shared how attending Berkeley Carroll was instrumental in developing confidence and meaningful friendships- specifically ones united by a particular zeal for "jinx", "nose goes", and commitment to collective agreement. Reed Z. talked about how people often have "selective memories" which are hardwired to make us remember our most humiliating moments but that reflecting on them can teach us more about ourselves, and remind us not to take ourselves too seriously.
SENIOR SPEAKERS (PART II)
Congratulations to our second set of Senior Speakers, Ellie S. and Sophia T.! Ellie spoke about having a "passion for doing nothing" and shared plenty of life hacks for optimizing laziness, wisely remarking that it's important to have balance in our lives, and that it's "just as important to do nothing as it is to do something".
Sophia shared some Berkeley Carroll career highlights, including giving an Arch Day speech in Lower School about nurturing some class pets with limited success, and a valiant effort at writing an essay drawing comparisons between Toni Morrison's "Beloved" and the CW teen drama "Riverdale". Great job, Ellie and Sophia!

5TH GRADERS PRESENT MATH BOARD GAMES THEY CREATED TO 6TH & 7TH GRADERS
To wrap up their intensive study of fractions and decimals, 5th graders put their new knowledge to use: creating trading cards, crafting board games, and designing in-depth slide decks. Then they invited 6th and 7th graders to a forum where they presented their projects and took questions from the audience.
