BC'S MOCK NEWBERY AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCED
Congratulations to BC's Mock Newbery Award Winner for 2022: "Starfish" by Lisa Fipps. They also named two honor titles this year: "Amari and the Night Brothers" by B.B. Alston and "The Shape of Thunder" by Jasmine Warga. After much deliberation and multiple rounds of voting, the club was proud to select these three books.

4TH GRADERS OPEN A CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM

4th graders curated and opened a Civil Rights Museum! Students researched the Little Rock 9, the Freedom Rides of 1961, and the Greensboro Lunch Counter Sit-in; they then created artifacts, diaries, and images telling the story of these historic moments.

UPPER SCHOOL HOSTS "BLACK JOY" OPEN MIC ASSEMBLY

BC Upper School students and staff met for an Open Mic Assembly celebrating Black joy, love, and art. Students and staff shared poetry, the BC Jazz messengers performed, BC Vocal Ensemble members sang 'Lift Every Voice,' and the BC Dance Ensemble presented 'Be Alive!'

SENIOR SPEAKERS
Congratulations to our latest group of Senior Speakers: Carly S., Fiona G., and Will C., who regaled us with their wonderful speeches! Carly talked about embracing a Gemini personality - and how, although the quest for knowledge led to a unique Science Research and Design project, it also led to an embarrassing nickname… which Carly now embraces.

Fiona shared some potentially embarrassing moments around coffee and the cold while at BC; and how Fiona is able to laugh at each of them today. Will spoke about a journey with music; even though it was something disliked in Middle School, playing and listening to music became a true passion after discovering just how many great genres there are out there.

STRUCTURAL BIOLOGIST TALKS TO STUDENTS ABOUT ENZYMES & PATHOGENS

Upper School Advanced Biology classes welcomed Elizabeth Campbell, a structural biologist that looks at how enzymes (RNA polymerases and helicases) function in pathogens (Mycobacterium tuberculosis and SARS-CoV-2) and how inhibitors can be used to shut down their activity. She talked to students about her research at the Darst-Campbell Lab, and how a molecular biology background is helpful in reading articles in the general media.
