VIDEO: 1ST GRADERS BUILD A BOAT FOR 1 ADULT …AND IT FLOATS! 1st graders used their knowledge of water density and buoyancy to build a one-person boat out of recycled cardboard boxes full of air (buoyant!) and covered it in duct tape to waterproof it. To prepare for the building process, students constructed data charts based on their experiments with floating and sinking and their studies on materials that absorb or repel water. Science teacher Ms. DiLeva loaded the boat into the BC pool, got in and tested it to see if it floats. And... (drum roll please): she successfully paddled across the pool without sinking! (Watch the video,) Congratulations to our 1st grade shipwrights! | |

BC ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE INSPIRES STUDENTS TO ENGAGE WITH PUBLISHING IN DIFFERENT WAYS This year, BC welcomed Yusuf Hassan as an Artist-in-Residence. Mr. Hassan is a founder of BlackMass Publishing, whose works have been acquired or exhibited by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Studies, Langston Hughes Library and MoMA PS1. In addition to presenting artist lectures, he encouraged and challenged students to engage with publishing as a means of exchanging and distributing information and art that extends far beyond the scope of a book. An exhibition, 'The Student is the Author,' featuring images, text and student Zines inspired by creative exchanges between Mr Hassan, students, and faculty, is on display at the Lincoln Place atrium until the end of April. |

SENIOR SPEAKERS Congratulations to our latest Senior Speakers, who showcased funny, thoughtful and personal speeches that highlighted their unique life experiences. Siena B. spoke unapologetically about a love/obsession with Taylor Swift - and how Taylor is sometimes underestimated but is actually an empowering role model and exceptional artist. Eden R. shared a fascination with fearful things --volcanoes, airplane crashes, boats and heights--and how Eden gained confidence by facing these things head on and learning more about them. Annie M. reflected on a focus on gender equality throughout years of schooling, discovering that Annie has always been a feminist (even when unaware!) |

7TH GRADERS CREATE "LORENA: LA CORREDORA" GALLERY WALK In 7th grade Spanish, students visited each other's classrooms to recognize and award their classmates' latest projects: an infographic based on the novel, "Lorena: La Corredora", which tells the story about a young Rarámuri girl from Mexico who wins ultramarathons running in sandals. In this gallery walk, students evaluated each others' creativity and understanding of the novel in colorful and comprehensive infographics. All ¡en español! |
