BERKELEY CARROLL CELEBRATES 134TH COMMENCEMENT AT BROOKLYN STADIUM Congratulations to the 83 members of the Class of 2021 who graduated from Berkeley Carroll today at our 134th Commencement! Class co-presidents Tife A. '21 and Caleb D. '21 greeted the audience of friends, family, and faculty who gathered to watch students receive their diplomas on the field of MCU Park, home of the Minor League Baseball Brooklyn Cyclones.
The audience also heard from Head of School Dr. Lisa Yvette Waller, Class Speaker Kai E. '21, Faculty Commencement Speaker and Upper School English Teacher Rafael Sanchez, and Dean of the Class of 2021 Andrew Stein. Members of the Upper School Jazz Ensemble performed 2 numbers during the ceremony.
Writer/editor and bird watcher Christian Cooper delivered the Commencement address at the Senior Dinner the night before, where graduates also heard from Senior Dinner Speakers Ashley A. '21 and Leonora M. '21. Photos from Commencement 2021 will be posted in early June. We will miss the members of the Class of 2021 and wish them the best in their lives beyond BC! "BC TALKS" CELEBRATES THE HISTORY, JOYS & CHALLENGES OF THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY Upper School students and faculty celebrated the beauty and rich history of the LGBTQ+ community during BC Talks: Pride! The day kicked off with a history of pride and what it commemorates by Middle and Upper School Theatre Director WT McRae. After a viewing of the documentary "State of Pride," students participated in workshops reflecting on both the joys and challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community. 3RD GRADERS STUDY CARTOGRAPHY & CONVERT GLOBES TO MAPS Third graders jumped at the opportunity to be cartographers in Research class! The challenge: Attempt to turn an inflatable globe into a flat map! MIDDLE SCHOOLERS LEARN ABOUT BODY POSITIVITY 7th and 8th Graders participated in an informative workshop and discussion about how to nurture a truly body-positive next generation with social worker and psychotherapist Zoë Bisbing. Ms. Bisbing is the founder of The Full Bloom Project, a research-informed resource that helps parents and schools create spaces where children of all ages, sizes, and gender expressions can naturally boost immunity to society's appearance-obsessed culture, decrease risk for disordered eating and body image injury, and channel their precious resources towards more meaningful purposes. SENIOR SPEAKERS Congratulations to the Class of 2021's final group of Senior Speakers, Tife A. '21, Daniel S. '21, Sophie G '21, Rowan D. '21, Shreya B. '21 and Theo G. '21! Tife told the audience that photographing her friends is an expression of love and shared a montage of her favorite moments from the past year.
Daniel spoke about how a soccer tournament in Norway and meeting players from all over the world shaped his appreciation of different cultures. In Sophie's household, cooking is not a chore but a favorite family pastime and she discussed her love of learning to prepare meals. Rowan presented independent research she conducted in American Studies on the topic of the evolution of Dracula in popular culture.
Shreya grew up in both the United States and India and she spoke about how her connection to both of her identities has shaped her life.Theo has always dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player and he shared some of the twists and turns of his playing career at BC. 5TH GRADE HAS FUN WITH SPECIAL THEME DAYS DURING SPIRIT WEEK It was Halloween in May in the 5th Grade as part of the student rep hosted Spirit Week! This was just one of the theme days students had fun dressing up for all week in addition to Wacky Hair Day, Decades Day, and PJ Day! FIRST GRADERS USE ART TO EXPRESS THEIR IDENTITY First graders recently completed a learning unit about what makes them who they are by sharing their favorite things to do, hobbies, facts about their families, and more! After contemplating their differences and similarities, each student created an identity poster celebrating all the special things that make them unique! UPPER SCHOOL AWARDS NIGHT Congratulations to all the Upper School students who were honored for their achievements in academics, athletics, and the arts during this year's virtual Awards Night!
