SENIOR SCHOLARS PREPARE TO PRESENT THEIR RESEARCH This Senior Scholars program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing serious scholarly work in the humanities, allowing students to develop their research skills and capacity for philosophical inquiry as they design and pursue a year-long independent project that culminates in a formal written paper and an accompanying public oral presentation.
This year's group of Senior Scholars has been hard at work asking deep and meaningful questions about the world around them and will be virtually sharing their independent research on Tuesday, May 11th, and Thursday, May 13! From Black visibility in superhero media to the history of cemeteries, learn about each 2021 Senior Scholar's presentation topic. SENIOR SPEAKERS Congratulations to our latest Senior Speakers, Lucy G. '21, Olivia B. '21, Rebecca N. '21, and Sorah G. '21! Lucy shared with the audience funny stories about some of her childhood fears, from mirrors to killer clowns. Olivia discussed ways to appropriately ask questions of an adopted child and reflected on recent Asian hate crimes and her own identity.
Rebecca reflected on how the pandemic has given her new insight into self care and spoke about how she has discovered joy in even the smallest ways. Having long loved the power of writing, Sorah took the audience on a stroll down English Class Memory Lane over her years at BC. MIDDLE SCHOOLERS ACE THE SPELLING BEE The Middle School hosted its first-ever Spelling Bee, and there were several winners who spelled all their words correctly! Congratulations to 5th Grade champions Hazel H. '28, Fiona K. '28, and Cami P. '28, and 6th Grade champions Rose O. '27, Leah T-S. '27, Astrid B. '27, and Veronica M. '27. Special thanks to Lucy B-K. '28 and the Spirit Club for organizing! 10TH GRADE STUDENTS CREATE PRESS RELEASES TO ANNOUNCE THEIR SCIENCE RESEARCH The 10th Grade students in the Introduction to Science, Research, and Design course might be the youngest SRD cohort at BC but they are already hard at work preparing to share their research with the world! To practice their science communications skills, students have written their own scientific press releases, an important real life skill for scientists to share their research with the general public. Read more about the hidden nature of mushrooms, anxiety reducing wearable tech, oil eating bacteria, and more at the 10th Grade SRD website. LEARNING LUNCH WELCOMES NOVELIST AMY ZHANG BC students and faculty welcomed novelist Amy Zhang to Learning Lunch! Ms. Zhang is the author of "This Is Where The World Ends" and the forthcoming "The Cartographers." Born in China, she grew up in Wisconsin and now lives in Brooklyn and she spoke to the group about her writing journey, addressed the recent rise in anti-Asian sentiment, and discussed what the role of writers and artists might be in the face of hate. KINDERGARTNERS PRACTICE THEIR SPANISH Kindergarten students had a fun time practicing their Spanish by reviewing some of the different vocabulary they've been learning in units about parts of the human body and food by making some very creative Fruit Faces!
