This week and next, we'll be sharing several student and faculty perspectives on this year's hybrid learning at BC, as written by student reporters for the Upper School paper, "The Blotter" A SUCCESSFUL REMOTE SOCCER SEASON AT BC "During what has been a weird year for everyone in the world—a year filled with isolation and little human interaction—the idea of a functioning sports season seemed very far-fetched," BC Blotter sport editor Sam O.'22 writes.
"However, with the work and cooperation of many members of the Berkeley Carroll community, we have been able to pull off a successful fall season. Even so, with everyone being so isolated it has been very hard to get an idea of what this season has really looked like. In order to gain more perspective, I interviewed Junior Varsity boys' soccer coach Mr. Swift to get his experience on what coaching a team has been like during this pandemic…" Read more. HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE A JAZZ CONCERT DURING A PANDEMIC? MR. ROBINSON HAS ANSWERS … "While Berkeley Carroll has done its best to make school feel as normal as possible in these strange times—and don't get me wrong, the school has done a fantastic job at that—there's one class that can never truly be the same: music. OUR NEW ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF EQUITY & INCLUSION Please join us in welcoming Senait Debesu, who joined BC's Department of Equity and Inclusion earlier this month as the Assistant Director! Senait is a New York City native with a deep commitment to equity in education. She spent the last two years at A Better Chance where she worked with students and families as they prepared for and navigated independent schools. Senait earned a B.A. in History from Tufts University and is a member of Prep for Prep 9's Contingent XVII. Her passions include photography, martial arts and a newfound interest in urban gardening! SENIOR SPEAKERS Congratulations to our latest Senior Speakers, Desi U. '21, Alex C. '21, and Seta A. '21! Desi revealed to the audience that the question "What do you want to be when you grow up?" has always been a difficult one for her to answer, and told the audience that there are far more interesting questions to ask young people.
Alex shared some of her musical inspirations as a growing singer-songwriter, from writing her first song in middle school to her love for lyrical ambiguity, and then performed a new song that she wrote and composed. Seta talked about the importance of names and how she advocated to change her name, saying it wasn't always easy convincing adults in her life but she's so grateful for her stubborn and confident younger self for expressing who she was. 1ST & 2ND GRADERS STUDY SALT FORMATIONS 1st and 2nd graders conducted a fun experiment in a collaborative unit between science and library classes! After studying how salt crystals form, they grew their own in science class. Then in library class, students created their own cartoon characters and comics after examining the different shapes their crystals formed! LOWER SCHOOL ASSEMBLY CELEBRATES DR. KING'S LEGACY At their recent assembly, Lower School students learned about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the continued work of activists today, and reflected on the historic inauguration of Kamala Harris, who became the first female Vice President as well as the first Black American and the first person of South Asian descent to hold the office!
