UPPER SCHOOL EXAMINES "THE ARC TOWARD JUSTICE" In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Upper School participated in a day long series of discussions and workshops for "BC Talks: The Arc Toward Justice." Students heard a keynote address from author and scholar Dr. Mecca Jamilah Sullivan, Assistant Professor of English at Bryn Mawr College, who spoke on Black Feminism, poetry, and joy and how they can deepen activism today.
Upper School History Teacher Ashley Finigan provided a history of the origins of MLK Day, including the efforts of music legend Stevie Wonder to help create the national holiday; and Upper School History Teacher Amber Thomas taught a lesson on Critical Race Theory before students broke into discussion groups to examine race in technology, medicine, environmentalism, and more. 2ND GRADERS CONDUCT ROCKET LAUNCH IN THEIR AEROSPACE ENGINEERING LEARNING UNIT 2nd grade students recently finished an aerospace engineering unit in their STEAM class with a test launch of their paper rockets! Prior to the launch, students spent several weeks learning about the parts of the rocket, the science behind how rockets work, including thrust and gravity, and then designing their own rockets to launch to the moon! SENIOR SPEAKERS Congratulations to our latest Senior Speakers, Adam R. '21, Luke E. '21, Caleb D. '21, and Kai E. '21! Adam spoke about how he's spent a lot of time convincing his friends about music tastes, soccer teams, and favorite athletes, but he told the audience it's important to step back and reflect on whether an argument is worth having. Luke shared how a life-changing experience in Middle School with a live action role-playing game brought together his artistic and athletic sides in a way he'd never experienced before.
Caleb reflected on his favorite movie of all time, "The Big Lebowski." Despite the comic nature of the film, he said that the film actually provides a very insightful philosophy on how to live a good life. Kai presented a series of short films he wrote and starred in, providing his views on everything from how to choose a healthy snack, procrastination, to the challenges of close reading in English class. BC FACULTY MEMBER ATTENDS NATIONAL HEALTH CONFERENCE Middle and Upper School Health Teacher Alyssa Robbins attended this year's virtual Sexuality Liberators and Movers Conference, joining esteemed educators, therapists, and clinicians from around the country! The conference, led entirely by sexual health experts of color, was dedicated to rethinking sex education that centers and affirms students. NATIVE AMERICAN SCHOLAR DISCUSSES HOW TO BETTER SUPPORT THEIR COMMUNITIES Upper School students in the Indigenous People History elective virtually welcomed Native American literature scholar Daniel Radus to class! Dr. Radus is an Assistant Professor of English and co-coordinator of Native American Studies at SUNY Cortland. Students had the chance to ask questions about how to continue their scholarly pursuit of Native American studies in college, the types of careers available to them afterwards, and how to use their research to better support Native American communities! LOWER SCHOOLERS SHARE SELFIES WITH THEIR FAVORITE BOOKS 3rd and 4th graders shared their "book selfies" featuring their favorite books!
