3RD GRADER RANKED TOP 3 IN THE USA AND MEDALS AT TRACK & FIELD JUNIOR OLYMPICS Everett '30 won 3rd place in the 2000 Meter Cross Country at this year's USA Track and Field Junior Olympics in Lexington, Kentucky. Everett, who also runs for the Prospect Park Youth Running Club in Brooklyn, is now ranked 3rd in the country in his division and was also named an All-American and the USATF New York Youth Athlete of the Month for December 2020! BC TEACHER WINS NATIONAL AWARDS FOR BEST CHILDREN'S MUSIC & MULTICULTURAL BOOK Lower School Music Teacher Carolyn Sloan's latest book, "Welcome to Jazz," is now a multi-award winner! Ms. Sloan's picture book exploring the history of jazz won a Northern Lights Book Award for best children's music book, a Nautilus Gold Award for best children's nonfiction picture book, and a Skipping Stones Award for best children's multicultural book! BC SPEECH & DEBATE TEAMS TAKE TOP PLACES IN MULTIPLE CONTESTS TO END 2020 The Upper and Middle School Speech and Debate teams wrapped up the 2020 portion of their competitive season with spectacular results!
At the Brooklyn Debate League Tournament, Khalil F. '23 won 1st place in Declamation; June F. '21 and Simon H. '22 won 1st place in High School Public Forum Debate; and Jude M. '27 and Wendell S. '27 won 1st place in Middle School Public Forum Debate! Anika F. '23 took 2nd place in Declamation and Noa B. '22 took 3rd place in Original Oratory.
At the Brooklyn Queens Catholic Forensic League, Jacob G. '24 placed 5th in Declamation while Maggie S. '21 placed 6th in Original Oratory. KINDERGARTNERS MAKE SNOW PUPPETS & PERFORM SHOW FOR FAMILIES Kindergarten students don't have to worry about their snow people melting! They made their own snow puppets and then performed a show for friends and family over Zoom! SENIOR SPEAKERS Congratulations to our latest Senior Speakers, Charlotte H. '21, Ceci R. B. '21, Harry J. '21, and Mira P. '21! Charlotte spoke about how art had always been a crucial part of her identity, but in high school she found her creative faucet had run dry. She shared how she learned to let go of perfection and rediscover carefree exploration.
Ceci has always been someone who is seen as fearless, and she attributes that with her love for hiking. She said that after confronting a bear in the wilderness, things like a math test just don't seem as scary. Harry has long been passionate about the environment and environmental justice, and he shared with the audience how recently reading the book "Braiding Sweetgrass" has made him even more aware of how the earth shows love for all living creatures.
Mira has been at BC since she was 4 years old and discussed how the school is really like a second home for her. She talked about her long BC history and shared some of her favorite moments, from new hairstyles to Halloween celebrations. LOWER SCHOOL LIBRARY CAFÉ HELPS STUDENTS STRENGTHEN SKILLS At the Lower School Library Cafe, great books are always on the menu! As first grade students strengthen their literacy skills, they are also beginning to think about what books most excite them. Using a library book menu, students selected literary genres from a library book menu, giving them an opportunity to think about their own interests as readers.
