SPEECH & DEBATE TEAM MAKES THEIR MARK AT YALE ONLINE TOURNAMENT The Speech and Debate team kicked off their season at an online tournament hosted by Yale University with great success! Congratulations to Khalil F. '23, Anika F. '23, and Alice E. '23 who advanced to the semifinal round in Declamation! In addition, Aidan K. '21 competed in Humorous Interpretation, Noa B. '22 competed in Original Oratory, and Carly S. '22 competed in Oral Interpretation. The JV Public Forum Debate teams of Alexa B. '24 and Oliver K. '24 and Chrissy C. '23 and Hannah W. '23 also had strong performances! INTRODUCING BC'S NEW, EXPANDED HEALTH TEAM Berkeley Carroll now has 3 nurses, an athletic trainer and nurse's aide, who have been working together to establish guidelines during this unprecedented time. The team consists of Nancy Rosenthal, Director of Health Service and Upper School Nurse; Jenna Gonzalez, Lower School Nurse; Annie Muire, Lower and Middle School Nurse; Becky Schwartzman, Athletic Trainer; and Rebecca Heiss, Nurse Aide.
The team will be working across all 3 campuses and with the entire BC student body, as well as faculty, staff, and parents. It will be up to all of us to keep our BC community safe as we prepare to return to campus next week. All families received an email with specific information and phone numbers for the Health Team last week. Go BC! LOWER SCHOOL CELEBRATES HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH The Lower School celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month during their recent morning assembly! Students learned about how the holiday was established to recognize the important contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans and how the month also celebrates the anniversary of several Hispanic countries that declared their independence in September. Members of the BC community shared a bit about their own Hispanic heritage, including some of their favorite traditions and foods! STUDENT PEER LEADERS LEAD TEAM BUILDING AT PROSPECT PARK 12th grade Peer Leaders and 9th graders enjoyed some team building activities at Prospect Park during the annual Peer in the Park event! WELCOMING OUR NEW FACULTY This week, we continue introducing some of Berkeley Carroll's newest faculty! LILY FAWCETT, LOWER SCHOOL ASSOCIATE TEACHER Before joining BC, Lily spent 7 months teaching English to high school students on a Fulbright grant in Mexico. She has a bachelor's degree in applied linguistics and Spanish from Washington University in St. Louis and a background in adult ESOL, medical Spanish instruction, and after-school tutoring for K-5 students. She is bringing her love of language and all kinds of learning to Kindergarten this year! EMMANUELA BLANC, LOWER SCHOOL TEACHING ASSISTANT Emmanuela is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University and holds a BA in Journalism and a minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies. A creative entrepreneur who has worked with organizations like the GO Project to help bring educational resources to students from lower-income neighborhoods, Emmanuela is particularly interested in writing, painting, video editing, and providing everyone a platform to share their personal stories!
