SPEECH & DEBATE TEAM ENDS A SPECTACULAR YEAR WITH NYC & NATIONAL RECOGNITION The Speech and Debate Team celebrated a successful 2020 season with members capturing more than 50 Top Five finishes at city and regional tournaments as well as recognition at the national level.
Jake P. '20 qualified for 5 national tournaments and was honored by the National Speech and Debate Association with the Academic All American Award, awarded to only 2% of NSDA member students each year! Capping off four successful years on the team, he received the team's Excellence in Speech Award; June F. '21 received the Excellence in Debate Award.
The team also said thanks to their five graduating seniors, Jake A. '20, Renate B. '20, Jordan H. '20, Abby L. '20, and Jake P. '20! Photos and updates about the team's season. LOWER SCHOOLERS ACE THE "TUBE TO TOY" CHALLENGE 1st and 2nd graders let their imaginations run wild for a "Tube to Toy Challenge" in their STEAM classes! Starting with just a paper tube, students created musical instruments, fantastic creatures, rocket ships and more! SENIOR SCHOLARS PRESENT THEIR RESEARCH Our 2020 Senior Scholars spent the year asking deep and meaningful questions about the world around them and just presented their independent research. In this video, the students revealed their research topics, which ranged from LGBT+representation in animé & American TV to poetry in the Trump era to NYC's universal PreK. BC'S ASIAN AMERICAN ALLIANCE DISCUSSES HARDSHIPS & RACISM STEMMING FROM COVID-19 CRISIS The Upper School's Asian American Alliance hosted a virtual panel, "Conditional Americans: The Asian American Experience and Covid-19," where Asian-American speakers and activists shared how they are working to bring their communities together, a time when there are added hardships and racism towards the Asian population in both America and around the world.
From creating events to keep the NYC Chinatown community connected to offering digital care packages through organizations like the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, they spoke about the importance of togetherness. SENIOR SPEAKERS Congratulations to our final Senior Speaker of the year, Nicole N. '20! Nicole spoke about how, despite always having a smile on her face, she is a fierce competitor in the classroom and on the athletic field. Her commitment to both academics and sports began at a young age after a series of injuries in Middle School, including having to start 7th grade on crutches. Undaunted by those challenges, she instead found these experiences instilled in her a positive attitude and a can-do spirit! BREAKFAST CLUB HEARS FROM COUNCIL MEMBER ABOUT WHAT POST-PANDEMIC NYC MAY LOOK LIKE World Affairs Breakfast Club welcomed New York City Council Member, Brad Lander! Mr. Lander, who represents the 39th District in Brooklyn and serves as the Council's Deputy Leader for Policy, spoke to students and faculty about NYC's response to COVID-19 and what a post-pandemic future might look like to make the city a safer and more equitable place to live. NEW PODCAST: ELISABETH THOMAS '06 TALKS ABOUT HER DEBUT NOVEL Listen to the latest episode of the Beyond BC Podcast with author Elisabeth Thomas '06/Yale '10! Lissie, a native to Brooklyn and a former archivist at the MoMA, is launching her debut novel with Harper Collins this summer entitled "Catherine House." A gothic-infused literary suspense tale that was inspired in part by her love of great fiction such as "Jane Eyre" and "Bluebeard," it also draws from her time as a student at Yale.

STUDENTS WORK WITH ACCLAIMED MUSIC ARTISTS BC students had the opportunity to learn from some extraordinary guest musical artists: Tony Award-winning arranger and music director Martin Lowe and innovative folk artist and composer Moira Smiley!
Mr. Lowe won the Tony Award for best orchestration for the musical "Once" in 2012. He spoke to Middle School and Upper School Choirs about how he began his career in musical theater. Ms. Smiley led the Upper School Concert and Chamber Choirs and Middle School Choir in body percussion workshops, a special treat for students who had performed her songs "Refugee" and "Silvy" in concert earlier this year!
