2012 DNC SPEAKER ZACH WAHLS VISITS BC The Upper School welcomed Iowa State Senator Zach Wahls, who spoke to students about the realities of working in politics and answered questions, as part of BC's Visiting Speakers Program! Senator Wahls began his political journey when his 2011 speech to the Iowa State House Judiciary Committee during their hearing on marriage equality went viral. In 2012, he spoke at the Democratic National Convention and then won election in 2019. BREAKFAST CLUB DISCUSSES DIVERSITY IN VENTURE CAPITAL WORLD WITH BC-HARVARD ALUM World Affairs Breakfast Club welcomed BC alum Helen Ogbara Reeves '01 to talk about her work as a lawyer and her efforts representing and growing diversity in the venture capital space! Ms. Reeves, a graduate of Harvard College and Columbia Law School, also reflected on how her time on the BC Speech and Debate team influenced her career! STUDENTS CHEER ON BC TEAMS AT WINTER PEP RALLY BC Lions roared in the 181 gym during the Winter Pep Rally! The Spirit Squad led Upper School students in dance contests and basketball skill competitions before recognizing all the winter sports teams and their senior leaders for a successful season! 6TH GRADERS TAKE MASTER CLASS AT LINCOLN CENTER 6th grade musicians Leo K. '26, Cleo L. '26, Tobey I. '26, Eva W.-S. '26, and Willa S. '26 were invited to attend a master class at Lincoln Center taught by internationally acclaimed French Horn player and teacher Radon Vlatković! LOWER SCHOOL KINDNESS CLUB SEND 300 VALENTINES TO KIDS IN HOSPITAL The Lower School Kindness Club sent nearly 300 Valentine's Day Cards made by Lower and Middle School students to children currently in the pediatric ward at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital! BC alum Olivia Saleh '14 is a child assistant at the hospital and said patients were very excited to receive them! MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TEAM FINISHES TOP 5 The Middle School Math Team's hard work added up to a Top 5 finish at the Mathcounts Brooklyn Chapter competition! Congratulations to Moss B. '24, Renee C. '25, Soefi E. '25, Michael G. '25, Daniela H. '25, Oliver K. '24, Sarah K. '24, and Michael L. '24, and Aravind B. '24 and Saul N. '25 who advanced to the high-speed Countdown Round! UPPER SCHOOLERS PITCH THEIR PRODUCTS AT BC SHARK TANK 11th and 12th grade Design students presented their own product companies during a version of BC Shark Tank! Students shared a range of ideas and inspiration for new toys, finance apps, clothing brands, even a teddy bear that doubles as a heart rate monitor for babies! "PIPPIN" WOWS AUDIENCES The Upper School musical production of "Pippin" was a magical and unforgettable experience! Photos. SENIOR SPEAKERS Congratulations to the latest round of Senior Speakers (L-R Jake A. '20, Aaron R. '20, Isabella R. '20, and Helen F. '20). Jake spoke about how he's learned that just because something doesn't start well doesn't mean it can't end well. Aaron discussed how so many of his loves, from baseball to music, have been passed down to him from his older siblings, but coming to Berkeley Carroll has allowed him to better discover his own identity.
Isabella shared a story with the audience about a night in Manhattan that she will never forget and how it has made her a stronger person. Helen spoke about how attending a Greek Orthodox school when she was in middle school, and that the experience navigating new cultural traditions had a profound impact on her life. SENIORS TALK "LIFE AT BC" AT LUNCH WITH DR. WALLER This semester, seniors have had the chance to join Head of School Dr. Lisa Waller for lunch to share their thoughts about life at Berkeley Carroll! It's been a great opportunity for Dr. Waller to hear firsthand from students and for students to get to better know Dr. Waller. DESIGN STUDENTS USE LIGHT TO BRING COMFORT 9th grade design students shared their creations for a lighting project that reflected empathy for the needs of hypothetical clients, from a person going through chemotherapy in need of a positive meditation space to a veteran dealing with trauma. 5TH GRADE MATH STUDENTS DEVELOP MEATLESS MONDAY MENUS In collaboration with the Upper School Environmental Action Team and the BC cafeteria, 5th grade math students worked on proposals for Meatless Monday Menus to encourage healthy eating that is also good for the environment! Through the project, students found recipes and then worked on converting units of measure, scaling quantities, and determining unit prices. STUDENT MAKES SOLO DEBUT IN INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE Congratulations to BC 11th grader Shreya B. '21 for her "arangetram," or debut, in the Indian classical dance, Bharatanatyam! Shreya spent 12 years training for her first solo artist performance. 2ND GRADERS PERFORM AT DANCE ASSEMBLY 2nd graders showed off their creativity and the technical skills they've learned in their own self-choreographed dance pieces for families, friends, and classmates at this year's morning Dance Assembly! ALUM IS YOUNG ARTIST IN RESIDENCE IN BROOKLYN GALLERY BC alum Anna Friemoth '08 is the Young Artist-in-Residence at Ground Floor Gallery! Her solo exhibit, "Vertigo," is a striking series depicting abstract self-portraits and the Ground Floor Gallery is owned by former BC Middle School Spanish teacher Krista Scenna!
