GOLD MEDAL PARALYMPIAN VISITS LOWER SCHOOL Kindergarteners were so excited to meet gold medal-winning Paralympic swimmer Rudy Garcia-Tolson! He told the group, despite 15 operations as a child that led to the removal of both his legs, he never gave up on his love for swimming and went on to break records in three Paralympic Games! Students had the chance to ask questions and even try on his gold and silver medals, and left with Mr. Garcia-Tolson's encouragement to say "Yes, I can!" when they are faced with a challenge. BC DELEGATION HEADS TO NATIONAL CONFERENCE BC staff and faculty departed for Seattle to attend and present at the National Association of Independent Schools People of Color Conference! This year's theme, "1619. 2019. Before. Beyond. Amplifying Our Intelligence to Liberate, Co-create, and Thrive," commemorates the 400 years since the first British ship arrived in North America initiating enslavement of black African people. HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR SPEAKS TO STUDENTS ABOUT CAPTURE & ESCAPE FROM NAZIS 91-year-old Hirsch Grunstein visited BC to speak to 10th graders in the "Holocaust and Human Behavior" history elective. As part of this course, students examine the choices that people have made in the past and continue to make today -- and then design their own models of Holocaust memorials. From a cracked fish tank to an overflowing washing machine, she said she is thankful for friends and family who are always there to laugh and lend a hand when a water emergency strikes.
Ben S. has gone by a number of nicknames during his years at BC. They've all taken different forms from Kindergarten to the Upper School, and although he wasn't always a fan of them when he was younger, each name has taken on its own meaning and has become part of his larger identity.
