NATIONAL SPEECH & DEBATE HONORS FOR JIM SHAPIRO The Speech and Debate team hosted a special evening to say thanks to its eight graduating members, and announce a national honor for Middle School Director and speech and debate coach, Jim Shapiro. Seniors Maija F. '19, Noah F. '19, Mosab H. '19, Skye K. '19, June M. '19, Lisette M. '19, Victoria S. '19, and Alayna T. '19 shared special memories of their time on the team and said thanks to teammates and coaches. BC TALKS: ASIAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE The final installment of this year's BC Talks was hosted by the Asian-American Alliance. Students heard from a panel that included Meena Hasan, a Bangladeshi-American artist, MaryAnn Hu, a Chinese-American Broadway actress, and Allie Cuerdo, a Filipina-American documentary filmmaker all of whom discussed their experiences being Asian in their respective professional fields.
Students then chose from 12+ workshops facilitated by faculty and classmates on a variety of topics including Asian representation in hip-hop music and culture and the LGBTQ movement in India and more. The day ended with students reflecting upon their own background and drawing their family's path to New York on a world map and a student Open Mic! BC TEACHER (AND BEST-SELLING AUTHOR) RELEASES NEW BOOK Congratulations to Lower School Visual Art Teacher Judi Barrett on the release of her latest book, "Look What I See"! In this inventive story, Ms. Barrett, the bestselling author of "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," asks readers to look at the world from a variety of perspectives.

ATHLETICS Congrats to our Varsity Baseball team who made it to the NYSAIS Championships! Read next week's previews for Upper School teams and Middle School teams. 2ND GRADERS STUDY SUSPENSION BRIDGES AND BUILD MODELS Second grade has been studying transportation and the bridges and tunnels of NYC! Students visited the League of Young Inventors, founded by BC parent Meghan Eison, to learn about the history and engineering innovation of the Brooklyn Bridge before getting a chance to build their own model suspension bridge. STUDENTS DESIGN LATIN BOARD GAMES BASED ON "THE AENEID" Senior Latin IV students designed amazing board games as their culminating projects on Vergil's great poem about the legendary founding of Rome, "The Aeneid." Their games had to cover the entire 12 books of the poem and they used as much of the original Latin as they could. Of course, the games were also playable! SENIORS INTRODUCE THEIR INDEPENDENT RESEARCH PRESENTATIONS Come to Sterling Place next Thursday, May 23, from 8:15 am to 1:00 pm to hear from 15 Science Research & Design seniors and nine Senior Scholars as they present the findings of their rigorous independent research! They announce the topics in this short video or you can read them here and here. ALUM SPOTLIGHT: KEELY CLIFFORD '18 BC Alum Keely Clifford '18 had her first academic article published in the Five College Undergraduate Government Journal! Keely is attending Smith College, and in her paper she investigates the role of women in post-Soviet Russia. BC PARTICIPATES IN BROOKLYN IN SOLIDARITY Bella O. '19, Shailee S. '20, Aylin C. '21, and Carolyn D. '21 helped develop and lead this year's Brooklyn In Solidarity, a day that highlights and takes action on timely social justice issues, in partnership with peers from Saint Ann's, Packer, Brooklyn Friends, and Mary McDowell. Their work included facilitating small group discussions on this year's focus, "Disrupting Racism Through Restorative Justice."
