RAGTIME! EARNS RAVES FROM PACKED AUDIENCES Congrats to the Theatre Department and the cast and crew of the Upper School musical "Ragtime!" which is winning rave reviews from standing room only audiences. Their final performance is tomorrow for the lucky few that already have tickets! Ragtime! is usually performed at the college or professional level but our students have truly risen to the occasion with this production. Photos. CHESS TEAM IS #1 IN NYC GOING INTO FINAL PLAY THIS WEEKEND The BC Chess Team is in 1st place in the Chess Center of NY's Magnus League which consists of teams from 20+ high schools, including Stuyvesant, Dalton, Columbia Grammar and Prep, and Brooklyn Tech! The team will look to close out the season on top during final play this weekend! Their play this year is already an amazing accomplishment given that it's BC's first year in the league Congratulations to Sean C. '21, Christopher K. '21, Charlie W. '19, Diego T. '19, Youssef Ellozy '21 and Zachary T. '19! Go Lions! HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR SHARES HIS EXPERIENCES WITH 8TH GRADE Holocaust survivor and BC grandparent Allan Hall met with the 8th grade to share his experiences and offer his insights on human nature, recovery from trauma, and the responsibility to speak out and fight back against bigotry and political complacency. UPPER SCHOOLERS LEARN FROM IRAQ WAR VETERAN Derek McGee, an Iraq War veteran and activist, spoke with 11th grade American Studies students about his experiences in the Iraq War. Students are currently studying the U.S. and the world, a major theme of which is the evolution of the U.S.'s involvement in foreign affairs throughout the last century. NYU PROFESSOR SPEAKS TO STUDENTS ON HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF MOTOWN Ms. Ashley Finigan's senior Movement Soundtracks course welcomed Professor Michael Dinwiddie from NYU Gallatin to the class to talk about the historical and artistic context for the rise of Motown in Detroit, connecting it to the Great Migration and to blues, jazz, and ragtime traditions. ATHLETICS Congrats to our Varsity Softball team (above) on the strong 4-0 start to their season. Read Athletics Director Dick McGrath's preview for Middle School teams and Upper School teams. 4TH GRADERS SHOWCASE THEIR BIOGRAPHY PROJECTS IN CREATIVE FORMATS Fourth graders drew on their research and creative talents for a recent biography project by creating games, posters, slide shows, or animated videos to tell the stories of a change maker from the time of enslavement ---profiling historical figures like Harriet Tubman, Phillis Wheatley and Frederick Douglass. SENIOR SPEAKERS Congratulations to the latest round of Senior Speakers! (L-R Katsy W., Victoria S., Lily S., and Ella N.). Katsy spoke about her love of horoscopes and said it's not about what the stars say you should be, but how they can guide you to grow as a person.
Victoria S. revealed that when she found out she was coming to Berkeley Carroll after 6th grade she was both excited and nervous. But thanks to opportunities like being captain of the tennis team and participating in speech and debate, her time at BC has shaped her in ways she never could have expected.
Lily S. discussed how spontaneity is one of the most important things in her life—she even tries a different route to school every day, explaining that little adventures have taught her that amazing things can come from unexpected places.
Ella N. is one of five siblings and told the audience that while most people look to adults for inspiration, she has always turned to her three younger sisters and younger brother for support and to be inspired by their energy, creativity, perseverance, and just a bit of healthy competition. 7TH GRADERS TEST MATH SKILLS OUTDOORS Pre-algebra students took to the streets to put their math skills to the test! Using proportions to figure out the measurements of objects indirectly, students determined the heights of lampposts, flagpoles, classmates, and the Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Arch at Grand Army Plaza by measuring their shadows. BC CREATIVE WRITING SERIES CELEBRATES STUDENT TALENT Middle School students read their own poems, short stories, and excerpts from novels to a packed crowd in the library during the first Berkeley Carroll Creative Writing Reading Series!
