SPEECH & DEBATE SCORES BIG IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS Congrats to the 20 BC students on our Upper School Speech & Debate team who made their mark at NYS Forensic League Championship.
More than half of the team advanced to the quarterfinals or semifinals with Mosab H.'19 named State Champion in Program Oral Interpretation for the 2nd year in a row as well earning 3rd place in Original Oratory; and Jack P. '20 earning 2nd place in Extemporaneous Speaking. We are so proud of each student who competed in the competition, where 'just' earning a bid to compete is an achievement.
BC TEACHERS LEAD WORKSHOP FOR NYC TEACHERS ON IMPROVING STUDENT LEARNING Lower School Music Teacher Carolyn Sloan and Lower School Learning Specialist Jennifer Shirazi led a workshop for teachers from across New York City on the importance of reflection in student learning.
The NYSAIS workshop, "Reflective Practice and its Impact on Academic Study," grew out of the tenets of musical study and the importance of students being able to identify strengths and weaknesses to make practice more productive. That mindset extends beyond music to all subjects and can ultimately help students understand how they learn best. 7TH GRADE MATH FAIR ATTRACTS A PACKED HOUSE 7th graders showed off their impressive research to a jam-packed Lincoln Place Cafeteria during the annual Math Fair! The rainy forecast is playing havoc with next week's schedules. Read Athletics Director Dick McGrath's previews for Middle School Teams and Upper School Teams for more information. ART HISTORY CLASS HONES THEIR EXPERTISE ON 18TH CENTURY ART MOVEMENTS What's the difference between the Rococo, Neoclassicism and Romantic art movements? That was the question before the 12th grade students in Mr. Swift's Art History class! Working in small groups, students were given a series of unidentified paintings from various 18th century French artists and challenged to identify the movement each painting belonged to.
After close observation, students grouped each painting and came up with an original name and description of its identifying characteristics, like "Red Roman" used to describe the category of Neoclassical paintings, before presenting their case to their classmates and Mr. Swift who ultimately revealed the correct answers. OUR 4TH GRADE ENTOMOLOGISTS BUILD A BETTER BUG Over several months, fourth grade scientists immersed themselves in the world of entomology, the study of insects! As part of their study, students imagined and created their own biologically accurate insect species and then built their bugs in art class. The "Build-a-Bug: Ceramics Edition" exhibit is on display now at 181 Lincoln Place! SENIOR SPEAKERS Congratulations to the latest group of Senior Speakers! (L-R Jona I., Amber P., Gaia B., and Alayna T.) Jona I. shared her memories of going to a marine biology camp in Maine and how she learned you can't control the outcome of an event, so it's good to enjoy and live in the moment. Amber P. discussed her love of her daily routine, particularly the friendly greetings with the strangers she regularly passes. She encouraged the audience to take time in their busy lives to acknowledge those around them. Gaia B. spoke about her semester in Rome where, despite dressing like an Italian and speaking the language, locals often could tell she was an American. Reflecting on her music instructor's advice on how to act when taking the stage, she learned be fearless, stand tall and be herself. Alayna T. revealed how she's reflected a lot this year on the expectations others have for her and said she's looking forward to starting a new chapter and will let others see more of her inner self and not just what they think she is supposed to be.
