STUDENTS LEARN LEADERSHIP & TEAM BUILDING IN TANZANIA

Upper School students on our Tanzania academic program spent an amazing 12-day journey, collaborating with students in Arusha in cultural exchanges and learning sessions, where everyone was challenged to think about leadership, both at the community level and personally. They stayed with area families and learned about the community and culture of the Karatu region.

The group went on safari in Ngorogoro Crater where they saw zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, Masai giraffes, lions, water buffalo and hippopotami, and visited Olduvai Gorge, where they saw the birthplace of our earliest ancestors. They also engaged in team building activities with their Tanzanian buddies to help develop everyone's leadership skills, which included gathering water from the local well and wheelbarrowing it to a church, providing it with water for the next week (most buildings there don't have running water).

MIDDLE SCHOOL IMPROVES COSTA RICAN VILLAGE

Middle School students in our Costa Rica academic travel program stayed with local host families in the village of Chilamate, learning about Costa Rica firsthand, and working with the community on service projects which included painting a preschool classroom and garden work. They played soccer with their new friends, and went hiking, river swimming, zip lining and on a chocolate tour. They also learned to milk a cow and interviewed staff at an ecolodge (in Spanish)!

SENIOR SPEAKERS

Congratulations to the latest round of Senior Speakers! (L-R Maija F., Domenic A., and Olivia K.) People know Maija as a hardworking student with a passion for debate and surfing, but she wanted to share aspects of her fun and adventurous side, and gave several humorous examples, like when she wanted to be a fashion icon in Lower School and wore a fedora and flip flops every day, even when it was below freezing.

Domenic discussed his love for the Bronx, describing summer days playing street games with friends and seeing his beloved Yankees play. He hopes everyone will visit the borough, like the American Studies walking tour he led last year did, to see firsthand why he believes it's NYC's best borough.

Olivia talked about some of the invaluable life lessons she's valued most from her 4 years at BC. These included how she learned how to study from Ms. Adler; how to recognize the important things in life from Dr., Hughes; and perseverance from Mr. Rubin. She said she will carry all these lessons with her to college and into the rest of her life.

3RD GRADE LENDS A HELPING HAND TO KINDERGARTNERS

Ms. Fong's third grade class visited Ms. Khordoc and Ms. Smith's Kindergarten class to share their building techniques and work on a tasty building activity: creating unique structures using mini-marshmallows and toothpicks.
