BC SENIOR JUST ANNOUNCED AS SEMIFINALIST FOR PRESTIGIOUS JACK KENT COOKE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP Congratulations to Mosab H.'19 who has just been selected as a semifinalist for the 2019 Cooke College Scholarship Program! More than 6,000 students attending 3,782 high schools from every state in the U.S. applied for the prestigious program and only 55 semifinalists were chosen from across New York State.
Scholars are selected based on exceptional academic ability and achievement, financial need, persistence, service to others and leadership. Semifinalists are eligible for scholarships that provide recipients with up to $40,000 annually for four years to attend the college or university of their choice. BOB VITALO & ADMIN TEAM PRESENT AT NATIONAL INDEPENDENT SCHOOL CONFERENCE Head of School Bob Vitalo, Director of Community and Inclusion Brandie Melendez, and Chief Financial Officer Arunie Dias presented at the 2019 National Association of Independent Schools Annual Conference in Long Beach, California! They spoke to this year's theme, "Reimagining Independent Schools," in their workshop "Leveling the Playing Field: The Real Cost of Attending Independent Schools," exploring financial aid and inclusion by looking at areas of additional costs to families that go beyond tuition and how BC has worked to address those challenges. BC FACULTY PUBLISHED IN PHYSICS ACADEMIC JOURNAL After the latest snowstorm, you may have found yourself wondering about the physics of snowballs. Upper School Science Chair Scott Rubin's article in the latest issue of The Physics Teacher, the peer-reviewed academic journal of the American Association of Physics Teachers, will answer all your questions! Photos UPPER SCHOOL KICKS OFF SPRING INTENSIVES From exploring the works of Jane Austen and learning about World War II in film, to designing their own podcasts and honing their improv skills, Upper School students are in the thick of the first of two weeks of Spring Intensives! 8TH GRADERS STUDY PHYSICS OF BRIDGES As part of their study of the physics of bridges, 8th graders went on a field trip cruise around Manhattan to get an up-close tour of NYC's major bridges, led by the American Institute of Architects! The trip helped inform the model bridges students will design and build at the end of the unit. SENIOR SPEAKERS Congratulations to the latest group of Senior Speakers! (L-R Lukas H., Helena A., Claire D., and Kylie C.) . Lukas H. spoke about how things in life have a way of working out better than you expect. Helena A. discussed how she's not really interested in the latest music or fashion trends, and encouraged the audience to remember that embracing what makes you different is more important than how many Instagram followers you have.
Claire D. revealed that one of the most important ways she has grown while at BC is not taking herself so seriously. She's learned from her friends and her family that rather than getting mad or embarrassed, it's better to laugh alongside all the people who have made her years at BC special. Kylie C. discussed how, after trying to come up with all of her successes at BC for her speech, she realized that it might be more interesting if she shared some of her less than stellar moments, saying even though she didn't always succeed, she'll always keep trying. FACULTY KARAOKE It was students versus faculty in the Upper School for the first ever BC Sings: Karaoke Extravaganza!
