SENIOR SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT TO PLAY DIVISION 1 SOCCER AT SYRACUSE

Congratulations to BC senior Logan M. '19 who signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday to play Division 1 soccer at Syracuse University! Logan will play with the Orange in the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) against some formidable opponents including Notre Dame, Clemson, and Boston College.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TEAM SCORES BIG & IS ON THE WAY TO NYS COMPETITION

Congratulations to the Middle School Math Team for earning a Top 3 finish in the Brooklyn chapter of the MathCounts competition at the Tandon School of Engineering, thus qualifying for State Competition next month at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute! This year more than 50 students participated on our Math Team either as an elective or after school activity and Coaches Greg Scordato and Sharona Kahn were particularly proud of team spirit and friendship they witnessed every week.

 

The Lions were led by captain Oskar R. '23, Jack C. '23, Aravind B. '24, and Moss B. '24 along with teammates Chrissy C. '23, Ethan C. '23, Avi R. '23, Lane R. '23, Michael L. '24, Trent W. 2'4, and Saul N. '25, and faced off against 109 participants from 15 other Brooklyn schools.

UPPER SCHOOL INSTRUMENTAL CONCERT PLAYS TO A FULL HOUSE

A packed Sterling Place (and Facebook Live audience) saw our Upper School Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Wind Ensemble play an amazing program earlier this week. Our eighth grade student musicians joined them on several pieces.  Watch the concert: part one and part two

STUDENTS PROVIDE FOOD TO THE HUNGRY: #HASHTAGLUNCHBAG

10th grade students learned about food insecurity and food justice in preparation for hosting an event with #HashtagLunchbag, a grassroots collective seeking to address the issues of food insecurity in over 100 cities worldwide. Students gathered to make 300 bag lunches and then headed out into the community, visiting shelters, food pantries, and other areas to distribute lunches to people in need.

BC CAFETERIA: GREAT FOOD THAT SUPPORTS THE ENVIRONMENT

Chef Bridget and the entire BC Cafeteria team work hard to make sure the food doesn't just taste good but is also good for the local community and the environment!

 

From utilizing the Lincoln Place Rooftop Garden for meals, using napkins that are made from 100% recycled material, purchasing local bread and milk, serving only Monterrey Bay approved sustainable fish, finding innovative ways to reduce waste, and more, the Cafeteria is doing its part to keep BC well fed in a sustainable way.

LATEST "BC TALKS" FOCUSES ON BLACK LIVES MATTER

Upper School students and faculty gathered for the latest BC Talks to discuss and reflect on Black Lives Matter. The morning began with a viewing of the film "The Hate U Give" followed by student and faculty debriefs. The day culminated with a student-moderated Faculty Fishbowl to reflect on race and racism.

SENIOR SPEAKERS

Congratulations to the latest Senior Speakers! (L-R. Elly H., Tess F, Angela A., Melina S.)  Elly H. discussed her relationship with her brother and thanked him for helping make the dark less scary when they were little, for dance parties at home and for always supporting her (and vice versa).  Tess F. shared a memorable trip on her 17th birthday to visit cousins and friends in Kansas where they explored abandoned houses. 

 

Angela A. told the audience that her best friend is her younger brother, Jake and described how, despite incidents like accidentally losing him at a Park Slope parade and several interactions that led to hospital visits, Jake has always been someone she can rely on. Melina S. spoke about how much social and emotional growth she has gone through since 9th grade and her plans to take advantage of all the opportunities she has left at BC and make even more lasting happy memories.

UPPER SCHOOL MANDARIN STUDENTS HOST LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION

Upper School Mandarin class students recognized the start of the Lunar New Year by hosting a celebration to usher in the Year of the Pig! Students and faculty enjoyed games and stations throughout the cafeteria.

1ST & 2ND GRADERS MEET AUTHOR MEGHAN MCCARTHY

1st and 2nd graders had the chance to meet and draw with children's book author and illustrator, Meghan McCarthy! McCarthy shared what inspired her to become an artist and to write books, shared drafts from some of her popular works including "City Hawk" and "All That Trash," and even taught students how to draw their very own aliens!
