Exciting time to be a lion!

Our Girls Varsity Basketball team battled back in the second half of their home debut with Saint Ann’s in a game that came down to the wire. Our team tallied a tough two-point loss but is poised for a terrific showing in the Aviator Classic hosted by Avenues this weekend.

Next week, our Varsity Swim teams will officially begin their competitive season as they take on Dwight and Grace Church.

Our Middle School student-athletes are also showing tremendous interest and enthusiasm. This week nearly 200 middle school student-athletes participated in our basketball and swimming programs, and we are excited about the start of indoor flag football next we as well.

Cross Country Hot on the Trails

Congratulations to our Girls Varsity Cross Country Team, as they claimed this year’s ACIS League Championship Crown. Our boys team has much to be proud of, finishing second overall. The future of Berkeley Carroll Cross Country looks bright as our Middle School Team earned a top-five finish at the Bay Ridge Prep Invitational.

Our middle soccer and volleyball teams had great success on the fields and courts this season as well. Our student-athletes improved their skill and ability to work together as one cohesive team as the season progressed.

With an end to a fantastic fall season begins the winter season. The upcoming season is sure to be exciting as our basketball and swimming teams take on the competition. We also have a host of winter clinics available for upper school students interested in baseball, softball, soccer, and track and the introduction of indoor flag football for middle school students.

Lion Pride!

Girls Varsity Volleyball continues to collect wins in ACIS league play with wins over Brooklyn Friends, Friends Seminary, and Staten Island Academy to advance to the ACIS Varsity Girl Volleyball Playoff. They will take on Saint Ann’s in the ACIS Semi-Final on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

Girls JV Volleyball record an undefeated record in ACIS league play and hope to continue their impressive streak throughout the playoffs to earn a league championship. They will take on Dwight in the ACIS Semi-Final on Monday, October 25, 2021.

On the trails, Varsity Cross Country continues to compete at a very high level and is poised to contend for a league championship title on November 3, 2021, at Van Courtland Park.

BC Athletics Back in Action
After 18 months of remote and hybrid athletics, BC Athletics is back in person and preparing for competitive action. Our Upper School teams gathered at the Athletic Center on August 23, 2021, to kick off the fall season with two weeks of preseason training.

Our season officially opened on September 10, 2021, with games versus Saint Ann's. We were quickly reminded that we are back to play covid-19 still presents a plethora of obstacles to interscholastic athletic competition in NYC. Despite challenges with fields and transportation we managed to make the best of the circumstances and play four of our five scheduled contests.

Our teams are off to an excellent start, Girls Varsity Volleyball has tallied a win over Grace Church and sustained one loss to Saint Ann's in the early part of the ACIS season. Girls JV Volleyball open the season with undefeated ACIS league play with wins over Grace Church and Saint Ann's and has piled up wins in the AAIS with wins over Sacred Heart and Chapin.

On the pitch our soccer teams have demonstrated phenomenal teamwork and true BC pride and spirit. After a rocky start Boys Varsity Soccer mounted a 4 - 3 victory over Staten Island Academy. Girls Varsity soccer has tallied wins over Dwight and Brooklyn Friends and sustained two losses in ACIS league play to Saint Ann's and Grace Church.

On the trails of Van Cortlandt Park our Varsity Cross Country team had a strong season opener but followed up with a team win on in their second race of the season.

We are excited about the start to our season and look forward to seeing how we progress as the season continues.

BC Senior Earns D1 Scholarship

Congratulations to BC senior Michael Callan M. ‘21 who officially committed to Seton Hall University, signing his letter of intent on National Signing Day (and we also congratulate the Big East Division 1 school for signing him)! “I look forward to continuing my academic and athletic career at Seton Hall,” says Callan, who also earned a baseball scholarship from the university.

Hello Berkeley Carroll Community,

I hope this note finds you all as well as can be both physically and mentally in this unfortunate time. I wanted to update you on our endeavor of Remote Athletics. The tenets of our athletic program - teamwork, sacrifice, character - are more important now than ever. Our coaches have missed their student athletes, and our student athletes want to connect with their coaches and each other.

Varsity Coaches have used a variety of platforms to provide their teams with workouts each week. These workouts - some general and some sport specific - are designed to engage our athletes from a full body perspective, while also keeping them sharp in their given sport.

Varsity Coaches are also holding weekly full team get-togethers and offering time for one-on-one digital meet-ups with their players. These get-togethers help keep the social bonds that develop among teammates in place.

In the Berkeley Carroll Athletic Department, we are committed to caring for one another both physically and mentally.

We currently have two department members offering specialty classes for our athletes. Head Coach Lily Adler is leading Yoga twice a week and Athletic Trainer Becky Schwartzman is leading a strength and conditioning class once a week.

As we move through April and May together, we hope to build on each of these aspects.

In addition, the Berkeley Carroll Athletics Instagram (@berkeleycarrollathletics) has begun to display content to honor our Spring Seniors. Each Spring Varsity team is constructing a video that highlights the personalities and accomplishments of the Seniors in their program. The first of those videos was completed by Coach Adler and Varsity Track.

Follow us to see the rest of our Varsity Sports and much more throughout the Spring.

The Berkeley Carroll athletic program is wishing you all the best and is here for you if you need us.

Speaking for many,
Carmine Giovino, Director of Athletics

This week was the final for our Winter contests. That means we must extend our thanks to all the coaches, parents and student athletes who sacrificed their time to make this such a successful season. We will have a 5 week break before contests begin again for the Spring. Please be on the lookout for an email regarding uniform return.

7th/8th Grade Boys and Girls Basketball: The programs finished off huge seasons with a doubleheader sweep of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School at the Athletic Center on Thursday. After four years of having two teams for Boys Basketball, I was extremely excited to have enough interest to create two teams for Girls Basketball for the first time. This year more Berkeley Carroll 7th and 8th graders played basketball than ever before. Playing, not watching, is the best way to experience athletics and thanks to the coaches for all their hard work.

JV Boys Basketball: The JV Boys Basketball Team capped an amazing season with a league championship last Friday night with a decisive victory over Friends Seminary. The team went undefeated in league play, capturing the regular season title, and with the two victories in the playoffs completed a season where they did not lose to a single league team and had an overall record of 17-2.

Varsity Boys Basketball: The Varsity Boys Basketball program qualified for the NYSAIS State Tournament, a mark only shared by 4 other schools in New York State. It is an honor we are very proud of. The team was chosen for an at-large bid based on their record and strength of schedule. The team defeated Brooklyn Friends School in the opening round game behind 27 points from Elijah B. '22 before falling in the quarterfinals to Friends Seminary.

This is Championship week for our Upper School Sports teams, while Middle School wraps up their final games next week. NYSAIS State Tournament games take place next week as well, for those Berkeley Carroll Teams that qualify. As we approach the Spring Season and you are making summer plans as a family, keep in mind the summer preseason schedule.

Middle School Swimming: The Middle School Swim team wrapped up its season this week with two meets at home against Brooklyn Friends and the British International School. The 7/8 Girls also traveled to Sacred Heart for their invitational meet.

Varsity Swimming: This is the time of the year when our Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls Swim Teams compete in the Championships of their leagues. Last week, our boys and girls headed to Lehman College where a number of personal records and one school record was set. Michael M. '23, Zeb S. '23, Alex R. '22, and Youssef E. '21 set a personal best in the Medley Relay. Alex R. '22, Zeb S. '23, Laurence N. '23, and Michael M. '23 set a personal record in the 400 Free Relay. Michael M. '23 set a personal record in the 100M Backstroke. Alex R. '22, Youssef E. '21, Laurence N. '23, and Michael M. '23 set a school record in 200 Freestyle Relay.

Today our girls will compete in their second league championship with the AAIS at Asphalt Green.

JV Boys Basketball: JV Boys Basketball finished the season with a decisive victory over Grace Church last Friday night and earned a bye into Wednesday's Semi Finals as the #1 seed. A 30 point victory over SIA on Wednesday means the team plays at home in the Championship on Friday. The 4:00pm start is a rematch of last year's title game against Friends Seminary.

Varsity Boys Basketball: Varsity Boys Basketball finally got healthy for the first time in almost two months and boy did it show. The team had 4 games this week and played well in all of them. First up was state ranked Poly Prep where the team finally succumbed in the final seconds. Then a blow out of Grace Church on Senior Night when we said goodbye and thank you to George H. '20, Ben S. '20, Jason B. '20, and Justin W. '20. That was followed by a romp over SIA in the quarter finals of the playoffs. In their two match-ups this year, SIA had won by 2 in overtime and 3 in regulation. But a BC team at full strength scored the first ten points of the game, had an 18 point halftime lead and won convincingly by 9. In the Semi's, BC was matched with another state ranked team in Dwight and fell 54-42 in a defensive struggle. The team now waits to see if they earned a bid in the NYSAIS State Tournament.

JV Girls Basketball: JV Girls Basketball finished its most successful season in history at BC. They dropped their last two games to Marymount and Chapin but both were close and hard-fought. Coach Gunning and Coach O'Regan were so proud of their players and happy with how the season played out.

Varsity Girls Basketball: Varsity Girls Basketball said goodbye and thank you this week to seniors Malle S. '20, Cassie S. '20, Nicole N. '20, and Sierra M.-C. '20. The team went into Wednesday's ACIS semifinal off of two great days of practice and played great defense. Sadly, they too dropped a defensive struggle 39-32 to Friends Seminary. The team now waits to hear if they earned a bid in the NYSAIS State Tournament.

7/8 Boys Basketball: The 7/8 Boys Team defeated Friends Seminary in the first round of the Grace Church Invitational. This set up a match up with powerhouse St. David's in the championship game. The team played a great game but came up short.

5/6 Basketball: Both the boys and girls had unique doubleheaders with Grace Church this week. Boys traveled to Grace while we hosted the Girls at BC. 5th graders played first in both gyms, followed by 6th graders. Tons of fun for all involved!
