Parent Book Study: Good Talk by Mira Jacobs
In Person

About the Book: Like many six-year-olds, Mira Jacob's half-Jewish, half-Indian son, Z, has questions about everything. At first they are innocuous enough, but as tensions from the 2016 election spread from the media into his own family, they become much more complicated. Trying to answer Z honestly, Mira has to think back to where she's gotten her own answers- through her own conversations and experiences about race, color, sexuality, identity and love.

Book Study: This book study lends itself to a study of conversations, allowing us as a group to explore, discuss and contemplate the layers of complexity that come from questions and talks with those around us, especially with our children.

Essential Questions: How do we respond when our children ask us difficult questions- especially questions about race, politics, and current events? How do we respond when we ourselves don't know the answers? What and how do our own experiences offer and shape the way we think and have conversations? And how does what we learn in Good Talk inform or help us prepare to respond to the kinds of questions and situations that we witness in this memoir? How do we have "courageous" conversations?
