Meet the Team

Carolyn Middleton

Carolyn Middleton, Director of College Counseling at the Berkeley Carroll Carolyn Middleton, Director of College Counseling, came to Berkeley Carroll in 2016 with nearly 30 years in college admissions, advising, and counseling, having served most recently as Director of Admissions at Barnard College (NY). In addition to her prior experience in admissions at the University of San Diego (CA), Boston University (MA), and St. Mary's College (CA), her work experience also includes leadership roles in college counseling at two secondary schools, Colorado Academy (CO) and Sacred Heart Preparatory (CA), as well as a senior role overseeing academic advising for first years and sophomores at Columbia University. Carolyn is a member of the University of Toronto Advisory Board and reads applications for the University of California at Berkeley. She earned her graduate degree in Higher Education from Harvard University (MA). Carolyn is a member of NACAC (the National Association for College Admissions Counseling) and ACCIS (the Association for College Counselors at Independent Schools).

Luis Almonte

Luis Almonte, Associate Director of College Counseling at the Berkeley CarrollLuis Almonte, who joined the staff in 2019, came to Berkeley Carroll most recently from New York University (NY) where he advanced diversity initiatives for the admissions office and worked closely with students and families both from New York City as well as Mexico and Central America. Prior to NYU, Luis worked for the admissions office at Lehigh University (PA) where he read applications from the Berkeley Carroll School. Luis has also read applications for the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Program. The College Office team is extremely excited about the expertise Luis brings to our team with an MA in Counseling Mental Health and Wellness from New York University (NY). Luis is a member of NACAC (the National Association for College Admissions Counseling) and ACCIS (the Association for College Counselors at Independent Schools).

Joal Chen

Joal Chen, who joined the staff in 2022, came to Berkeley Carroll from New York University (NY) where she managed the first-year and transfer enrollment for three unique colleges within the university. She also assisted with scholar selection processes and developed curriculum for college access programs over her 6 years in NYU’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions. She also assisted summer scholars in developing their college lists, preparing for interviews, writing essays, and completing applications. Joal most recently completed her MA from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU with a concentration on race, film, national identity and education. Joal is a member of NACAC (the National Association for College Admissions Counseling) and ACCIS (the Association for College Counselors at Independent Schools).

Mary Dunne

Mary Dunne, College Office's Operations Manager at the Berkeley Carroll Mary Dunne, the College Office’s Operations Manager, has been a member of the Berkeley Carroll community for more than two dozen years, having spent many years in the Admissions Office before transitioning full time to College Counseling. She is efficient, detail-oriented, and incredibly knowledgeable about the college process. We are very lucky to have someone with her institutional memory and logistical expertise on staff.
