BC Speech & Debate Team Wins Multiple State Championship Titles

After a year of hard-fought victories, including impressive showings at a Brooklyn-Queens tournament, the Yale Invitational, and a national tournament at Columbia University, the Speech and Debate Team continued to make our school proud at the New York State Speech and Debate Championships.

This year 20 BC students out of a team of 40 qualified for the state championships at Hofstra University. It was the largest team the school has ever sent to this challenging competition. During the weekend-long event, half the squad advanced into elimination rounds, another first-time achievement. In 3 categories, Berkeley Carroll students were named State Champions. The NY State Championships is one of the largest debate competitions in the nation with hundreds of competitors. Earning an invitation to States requires top placement at at least two other tournaments earlier in the season.

"The support the students have given each other over the course of the year and on-site was heartening," says Speech and Debate Coach and Middle School Director Jim Shapiro. "Whether winning or not winning--they represented the school as well as one could wish."
