About the Program

A CAP Art Class

Our Purpose

The Berkeley Carroll Creative Arts Program provides an environment in which young people between the ages of 8 and 14 may pursue and develop an interest in the arts. We are committed to strengthening the role of the arts as a means of enhancing one's quality of life. Students both expand current arts interests and investigate new possibilities for creativity and self-expression. They find opportunities to explore their potential in the arts and related fields which will provide them with lifelong enjoyment.

Professional Staff

Marlene Clary, Director of the Creative Arts Program, brings a devotion to the arts and a distinguished record of teaching to her role as catalyst in this summer arts experience. An actor, director, and soprano soloist, she has appeared in leading roles in summer stock, Off-Broadway and regional theaters. Marlene is an experienced choir and theater director though her many years of work at Berkeley Carroll School, where she has been honored with the Dexter D. Earle Award for Excellence in Teaching. The professional staff of the Creative Arts Program are selected for their artistic and professional accomplishments, as well as their experience in working with children. The Creative Arts Program faculty strives to present a broad spectrum of the arts from which students may choose their particular areas of interest and study them in depth.

Facilities

The Creative Arts Program operates at the Berkeley Carroll Middle and Upper School campus at 181 Lincoln Place, in the historic Park Slope neighborhood. Our excellent facilities feature an award-winning five-story classroom building which opened in 1992, and a state-of-the-art performance space that was completely renovated during the 2001-02 school year. All classrooms are air-conditioned. In addition, there are music classrooms, a dance studio, a floor-through visual arts center with ceramics studio, a computer center and digital media arts classroom, a library, photo darkroom, dining hall, and gymnasium. Swimming instruction takes place at the school's athletic center located three blocks away at 762 President Street. The center has a four-lane, 75-foot long indoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and a basketball and volleyball court.

12:40 Time Performances

A CAP tradition, these performances are held from 12:40 to 1:10 pm daily. They are quite varied and include demonstrations of dance, drama, and music performed by students, faculty, and guest artists. The community is encouraged to attend these programs so that our students have the opportunity to develop poise and confidence by performing before live audiences.

Festival Day

Held on the last day of the program from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, this special day provides students with a chance to perform or exhibit the projects and pieces they have created during the summer. Parents, family members, and the community are invited to view and participate in presentations of music, dance concerts, art exhibits, choral demonstrations, scenes from plays, and athletic presentations.
