Explorations
July 14 - 24, 2008
In the two-week Explorations session, children choose to specialize in one of four mini-camps. Outdoor recreation time and swimming in the Athletic Center Pool are part of the campers' schedules in each program. Children must register for both weeks. Programs described are subject to change.
Hands-On Science
Grades K, 1, 2
"Hands On Science" is a nationally-renowned program for young children that stimulates "science in your life" awareness and the fun of active involvement in experiments, games, music and projects. One of the guiding principles of "Hands-On Science" is that students bring home a lab project or sample of their work after each class. Specific courses are designed around a theme, and individualized kits are prepared for each student. Previous sessions have focused on dinosaurs, the environment, the human body and astronomy. Other programs have included Waterworks, Under Foot, In the Air, and Ecology and Me. Summer programs remain the same each year but are adjusted according to the abilities and grade level. Science students have swimming at least once a week.
Studio Arts
Grades K - 3
Campers focus on specific "studio" areas such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, or collage. In addition to hands-on projects, campers will study the lives and great works of world-famous artists. Field trips to museums and studios of local artists will be arranged. Our young artists will have their own art studio set up on campus. Studio Arts students have swimming daily when on campus.
Creative Athletics
Grades K - 3
Creative Athletics offers campers new experiences and a wide range of physical activities both on and off campus. These include team sports, health and fitness activities such as aerobics, cooperative games from around the world, dance, and creative movement. Sports-oriented trips are planned to such places as Chelsea Piers, Leemark Lanes for bowling, a Mets game, and a mini-golf facility. Athletics students have swimming daily when on campus.
Adventures in Theater
(directed by Jocelyn Greene*)
Grades 2 - 3
Adventures in Theater seeks to engage each child's imagination to inspire creative and critical thinking in a way that only live theater can. Students will develop their performing skills and appreciation of theater. Individual and group work will be encouraged. Students will learn about the elements of creating a performance on stage, including voice, movement, and character development, and will present a performance for their families, friends, and fellow campers. Theater students have swimming three times a week.
* Jocelyn Greene has taught this class for the last three years.
