Libraries & Technology

Berkeley Carroll has three libraries, each staffed by professional librarians. The libraries are learning and resource centers for students, teachers, and parents. They provide reading and other multimedia materials that enrich the curriculum and foster a love of reading in each student. The library program helps students develop their communication skills through reading, listening, and critical thinking.

Students use the libraries through scheduled library classes (in the Lower School), for special projects and research, and for studies planned in collaboration with classroom teachers and specialists. The libraries also sponsor periodic visits by authors and illustrators, as part of the school's Visiting Writers program, along with storytelling and poetry festivals.

The school's technology teachers work closely with the librarians to develop students' proficiency in using information technologies. The school's Computer Centers are fully equipped, networked labs with Macintosh computers utilizing a file service and high-speed Internet access. The school buildings are wireless and several laptop labs are available for teachers to use in their classrooms.

Beginning in Kindergarten and continuing through 9th grade students take weekly or twice-weekly computer classes. The computer specialists work closely with classroom teachers to integrate computer activities with the language arts, math, social studies, and science programs. Students also learn to use the library's online resources and computerized catalog.
