Film and Video Arts
Upper School Film and Video Arts courses begin with foundation courses that introduce the fundamental elements of filmmaking. Students work both in groups and alone using digital video cameras and computer editing software to create their own films. Introductory projects are non-narrative pieces in the form of short, direct vignettes that examine cinematography and sound. Story and content are subsequently introduced. Class projects are structured to help students communicate clear and succinct ideas while focusing on the art filmmaking.
Eleventh and twelfth grade students are able to take Film and Video Portfolio courses which offer an in-depth exploration of the filmmaking process. Film theory is introduced and students’ work is put in historical context via film screenings, discussions with filmmakers and class critiques. Class projects help students develop mastery of all aspects of filmmaking, from pre-production, to the use of the camera, direction and post-production editing techniques. Students are encouraged to take narrative and stylistic risks producing a highly polished product.
